Demonstration, street festival, and Pride Weeks in the Saale city — for visibility, acceptance, and against discrimination
When rainbow flags fly from the Roter Turm (Red Tower) in early September and the Händel statue on the market square is surrounded by thousands of people for a day, it's time again for Christopher Street Day Halle (Saale). CSD Halle is the most important queer visibility event in the former district city and in all of southern Saxony-Anhalt — and for years, one of the largest Pride events in the new federal states.
The format is clearly structured: During the day, a colorful, loud demonstration marches through Halle's city center — starting from the market square, past the Roter Turm and Marienkirche, through the Robert-Franz-Anlagen. In parallel and afterwards, the market square transforms into an open-air street festival with a stage, live music, info booths from queer associations, discussions, and drag performances. In the evening, the city takes over with after-show parties in the clubs of the city center — Kombüse, Reilstraße, WUK, and several smaller bars become part of the Pride night.
All of this is embedded in the Pride Weeks: starting two weeks before the CSD weekend, a dense supporting program begins with lectures, book presentations, film nights, workshops, and regular meetups. Here, actors and actresses from the Saale city and from all over Central Germany come together, not only to celebrate but also to engage in political work.
CSD Halle is traditionally supported by three organizations: AIDS-Hilfe Halle/Sachsen-Anhalt Süd e.V. is responsible for the demonstration and after-show party, BBZ lebensart e.V. organizes the street festival and Pride Weeks, and the Jugendnetzwerk Lambda Mitteldeutschland brings in the young queer scene. Together with numerous volunteers, the three associations manage an event that attracts tens of thousands of people to the Saale city every year.
With around 240,000 inhabitants, Halle is the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and, after Leipzig and Magdeburg, one of the most vibrant cultural centers in Central Germany. The University of Halle-Wittenberg, an active club scene, and a political culture that is significantly more left-leaning than the surrounding area have made Halle a center of queer life in Saxony-Anhalt. The CSD here stands not only for celebration but also for clear messages against right-wing extremism, homo- and transphobia.
Political, colorful, loud, friendly. The demonstration is more activism than party; the street festival is small compared to Cologne or Berlin, but familial. The mix of political clarity and East German directness makes CSD Halle a very unique Pride experience — and one of the most important dates in the queer event calendar of Central Germany.
The 2026 edition offers the full program: two weeks of Pride Weeks, a festive day with demonstration and street festival, and evening after-show parties. The motto will traditionally be announced a few weeks before the event and will address current queer political debates.
CSD Halle 2026 is organized by AIDS-Hilfe Halle/Sachsen-Anhalt Süd e.V. (demonstration and party), BBZ lebensart e.V. (street festival and Pride Weeks), and Jugendnetzwerk Lambda Mitteldeutschland.
