Ruhrtriennale — the Ruhr region's industrial world festival

If you're looking for a festival that transforms the industrial cathedrals of the Ruhr region into stages for top international art, the Ruhrtriennale is the place for you. Since its founding in 2002 under founding director Gerard Mortier, the festival has become one of the most important European festivals for performing arts — music theatre, drama, dance, performance, visual arts, and concerts in the largest industrial monuments of the region. With the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, the Kraftzentrale Duisburg, the Maschinenhalle Zweckel Gladbeck, and the Mischanlage Zollverein Essen, the Triennale plays in spaces that set standards for artistic experience.

Date 2026 — August 20 to September 20

The Ruhrtriennale 2026 runs for exactly one month — from August 20 to September 20, 2026. During these 31 festival days, 114 events from 31 productions unfold — a highly concentrated program that combines opening premieres, concerts, dance evenings, performance series, and discourse formats.

Ivo Van Hove — last season of his directorship

2026 is the last season of Belgian theatre director Ivo Van Hove as artistic director. Van Hove, one of Europe's most influential theatre makers, has led the Triennale since 2024. His era is characterized by a clear aesthetic profile: visually minimalist, politically ambitious, with contemporary themes as a common thread. 'If the present becomes ever more dystopian,' says Van Hove about this year's opening program, theatre needs answers — and provides them, for example, with 'Rebel Rebel'.

'Rebel Rebel' — Opening with David Bowie

The opening premiere on August 20, 2026, is 'Rebel Rebel' — Ivo Van Hove's own production as a homage to David Bowie. The production centers on Bowie's music 'as a commentary on the present, which is becoming ever more dystopian'. Venue: Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. One of the most sought-after tickets of the season.

Further Highlights — Abramović, Rüping, DiDonato

  • Marina Abramović — the Serbian performance artist and doyenne of contemporary performance art presents a new work
  • 'Deutscher Herbst' by Christopher Rüping — world premiere of a historical-political production about the RAF era and post-war German history
  • Krzysztof Warlikowski — 'Europa', Polish star director explores intergenerational trauma
  • Lisaboa Houbrechts — music theatre 'Siddhartha' about identity and self-discovery
  • Joyce DiDonato — song cycle with settings of poems by Emily Dickinson
  • 'Erased Music' — closing series featuring performances of rediscovered compositions

Jahrhunderthalle and Turbinenhalle — the Bochum venues

The main venue in Bochum is the Jahrhunderthalle, a former gas turbine hall of the Bochum steelworks. With its enormous height, steel girders, and industrial patina, the hall is the iconic Triennale stage. In addition, the Turbinenhalle — a smaller, more intimate space — is used for chamber formats. Both halls are located in the Westpark area of Bochum, easily accessible from Bochum main station.

Five cities as the festival area

Unlike traditional city festivals, the Ruhrtriennale takes place in five Ruhr region cities simultaneously:

  • Bochum: Jahrhunderthalle, Turbinenhalle (main venue)
  • Duisburg: Kraftzentrale Landschaftspark Nord (industrial monument)
  • Dortmund: various venues
  • Essen: Zollverein complex (UNESCO World Heritage site)
  • Gladbeck: Maschinenhalle Zweckel

This geographical distribution makes the Triennale a total work of art of the Ruhr region — and also encourages intelligent festival planning: those who attend multiple performances can combine cities and venues to create their own festival tour through the region.

Approximately 45,000 tickets and early bird discount

A total of approximately 45,000 tickets are available for the 2026 season. Until May 31, 2026, an early bird discount of 10% applies to all tickets — a significant price advantage for the often high-priced premiere tickets. Price range from approximately €15 (standing room, simple concerts) to over €100 (premiere main categories).

Ruhrtriennale — edition 2026

The Ruhrtriennale 2026 takes place from August 20 to September 20 in 5 Ruhr region cities — main venue Bochum (Jahrhunderthalle, Turbinenhalle), Duisburg, Dortmund, Essen, Gladbeck. 31 productions, 114 events, 600 artists from 43 countries. Artistic director: Ivo Van Hove (last season). Opening 'Rebel Rebel' (David Bowie homage). Highlights: Marina Abramović, 'Deutscher Herbst' by Rüping, Joyce DiDonato with Dickinson. Early bird discount -10% until 05/31.

Ruhrtriennale 2026 — Van Hove's Last Season

The 2026 edition marks Ivo Van Hove's final season as artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale. With 31 productions, 114 events, and 600 artists from 43 countries, the festival offers one of the most concentrated programming schedules in recent years. The main venue is Bochum with the Jahrhunderthalle and Turbinenhalle; the festival also plays concurrently in Duisburg, Dortmund, Essen, and Gladbeck — the geographical distribution makes the Triennale a total work of art of the Ruhr region.
