Concerts on the Dike

Westerdeichstrich is a classic Dithmarschen coastal town in the district of Dithmarschen in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — south of Büsum, directly on the Wadden Sea. Here, on the Stinteck dike, the Westerdeichstrich Tourist Information (Gerhard-Dreessen-Hus, Neuenkoog 13) has been organizing a summer concert series for years, which is one of the unmistakable experiences on the North Sea coast.

What Makes It So Special

Every Sunday evening in July and August, changing artists perform on the dike from 7:00 PM — some solo with guitar, others as duos, many with folk, country, or singer-songwriter repertoires. The outdoor acoustics, the wide view of the Wadden Sea, and the setting sun lend the evenings an almost magical atmosphere. The audience brings their own folding chairs, picnic blankets, and drinks — no catering, no admission fee, no VIP area. Instead of ticket sales, the hat is passed around, with voluntary donations for the performers ("Hutgage").

A Tradition with Wadden Sea Identity

What distinguishes the Summer Evenings from Schleswig-Holstein's major open-air concerts (Travemünder Woche, Kieler Woche, Festspiele) is precisely this reduction: no backstage, no advertising banners, no stage technology. Just an artist, a dike, a Wadden Sea, and a few dozen to a hundred listeners. It is the antithesis of the festival mainstream and all the more irresistible for it.
