„In Händel Veritas — Music and Wine for (H)alle” — new Saale-Unstrut Wine Festival on the Market Square
Halle, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is not only the birthplace of Georg Friedrich Handel and the largest city in the state — it also lies at the gateway to Germany's northernmost quality wine-growing region: Saale-Unstrut. What could be more natural than combining the two? The city and Stadtmarketing Halle (Saale) have established a new event, the Hallesches Weinfest, running concurrently with the world-famous Handel Festival.
The concept is unique: 14 Saale-Unstrut vintners will be pouring their wines on the historic Market Square, under the gaze of the Marktkirche and the Roter Turm — Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Portugieser, and increasingly, many Cuvées. A dedicated stage will feature a packed programme: choirs, bands, and ensembles will cover a wide spectrum from Baroque music (a nod to Handel) to Jazz and Pop. A local brewery joins in, non-alcoholic alternatives come from the region, and culinary offerings range from roast duck to Salzwedel Baumkuchen.
Halle's Market Square is one of the most beautiful city centres in Central Germany — the five towers of the Marienkirche and the Roter Turm form the skyline. The Saalestadt is located in the independent city of Halle (Saale) and is reachable from Leipzig in 30 minutes. With the Wine Festival, Halle aims to develop its own culinary profile, distinct from the famous Handel Festival — even though the latter naturally fuels the former.
The detailed stage programme will be published in Spring 2026 by the city and Stadtmarketing. The motto concept, which links to the simultaneous Handel Festival, is confirmed: Baroque music meets Saale-Unstrut wine.
The exact lineup and times will be announced from Spring 2026 onwards at halle.de/weinfest.
Halle (Saale) main station is an ICE hub — 10 minutes on foot or by tram (several lines to 'Marktplatz') from the station to the Market Square. By car: A14 exit Halle, then head for the city centre. Car parks near the Market Square (Parkhaus Hansering, Parkhaus Riebeckplatz).
The Market Square is freely accessible. Wine and food are paid for using tokens or cash. Standard wine glass with deposit.
The Wine Festival runs from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Very popular during warm June weather — arrive early if you're looking for a seat at a standing table.
