Hadelbeerkerb – Spessart village celebrates its Kirchweih
The Hadelbeerkerb is the annual Kirchweih (Franconian: Kerb) of the municipality of Schollbrunn in the Main-Spessart district (Lower Franconia, Bavaria). It is traditionally celebrated in mid-July and is one of the firmly established Franconian Kirchweihen, as documented on fraenkische-kirchweih.de. The organizer is SC Schollbrunn 1949 e.V., the village's sports club, which has been responsible for the organization for decades.
Where the name comes from
Schollbrunn is located in the heart of the Hochspessart, a heavily wooded low mountain range with extensive pine and beech forests. Blueberries – Hadelbeer or Haddelbeer in Spessart dialect – grow abundantly in the forests around Schollbrunn. This led to the locally famous Hadelbeerpoatz, a blueberry cake that is freshly prepared for the Kirchweih. In the past, children and women used to pick the blueberries themselves – the tradition has been immortalized in the festival's name.
Four days in the festival tent on the grounds
The festival usually lasts from Friday evening to Monday and follows a proven schedule in recent years:
- Friday: Summer night party with DJ – Kick-off of the Kirchweih, tapping of the festival beer.
- Saturday: Live music in the festival tent with regional bands such as the Triefensteiner Musikanten or similar bands from the Spessart.
- Sunday: Festival day with a festival service, morning pint (Frühschoppen), concert by a brass band (e.g., "Spessart Echo") in the village square, and the traditional youth parade, organized by the village youth. Afternoon family program.
- Monday: Children's Kerwa with games, children's disco, and closing party (Kehraus).
Traditions surrounding the Kerb
In addition to the blueberry cake, the Schollbrunn Kerb maintains its own customs: the Festhahn – the traditional festival symbol, which is placed by the village youth on a raised pole – and the popular wine hiding game (Wein-Versteck-Spiel): a bottle of wine is hidden somewhere in the village, and the finder gets to keep it. These customs make the Schollbrunn Hadelbeerkerb one of the most distinctive Kirchweihen in the Spessart.
Schollbrunn in the Spessart
With around 800 inhabitants, Schollbrunn is a small Spessart community, located in the Marktheidenfeld administrative district. Its location on the edge of the Spessart Nature Park makes the village a starting point for hikes, bike tours, and nature observations. The Kerb is the annual highlight for Schollbrunn, bringing the entire village and many former residents back home.
