Traditional fish catch in the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with bird watching and carp market
The Blumberger Teiche in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve are among the largest contiguous carp pond farms in Brandenburg: 23 ponds, covering a total of 132 hectares, nestled in the eastern Brandenburg moraine and moorland near Angermünde. Pond farming has been practiced for centuries and is now part of the UNESCO protected area—a rare combination of traditional nature use and strict conservation.
The Großer Fischzug is the highlight of the autumn pond farming season: hundreds of carp are caught from the drained ponds in a single day. Fishermen pull heavy nets through the knee-deep residual water; the catch is weighed, sorted, and sold. The event attracts thousands of visitors annually and is both a tourist spectacle and an economic tradition.
A special feature is the combined ornithological tour offered by the Biosphere Reserve's Nature Conservancy. As the ponds are important resting places for waders and water birds in October—cranes, wild geese, herons, waders—the fish catch day is also one of the best bird-watching opportunities of the Brandenburg autumn. With binoculars and expert guidance, hundreds of waders can be observed on the drained ponds.
The NABU Blumberger Mühle sets up a market around the fish catch: fresh carp from the catch, smoked fish, carp pâté, mulled wine, and regional specialties. Younger guests will find activities at the NABU Nature Experience Center, a regionally renowned nature center with nature trails, an otter enclosure, and a water experience house.
Angermünde is the southernmost district town of the Uckermark district—the gateway to the Lower Oder Valley National Park and the Schorfheide-Chorin. The Großer Fischzug is one of the region's most important autumn events and part of the "Reiseland Brandenburg" (Travel Land Brandenburg) and Tourismus-Uckermark tourism programs.
The Großer Fischzug 2026 is expected to take place on the last weekend of October in the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve—typically on a Saturday or Sunday. The event is organized by the NABU Nature Experience Center Blumberger Mühle in cooperation with the pond farm and the nature conservancy.
On the drained pond, fishermen pull heavy nets through the knee-deep residual water, and the public can observe the fish catch from the paths. Concurrently, the nature conservancy staff conduct ornithological observations—the Blumberger Teiche are important resting places for migratory birds in October. A market with fresh carp, smoked fish, carp pâté, and mulled wine will be set up at the Blumberger Mühle.
