Shrove Tuesday Parade in the Lichtenfels District
For decades, the Großer Faschingsumzug Ebensfeld has been one of the highlights of the carnival tradition in the Landkreis Lichtenfels (Lichtenfels District). Organized by the Ebensfelder Karnevals Gesellschaft (Ebensfeld Carnival Society), the parade takes place on Shrove Tuesday through the Upper Franconian market town of Ebensfeld, attracting thousands of spectators each year from the Obermain region, the Coburg area, and the northern Bamberg region.
A characteristic feature of the Ebensfeld parade is the self-built floats, which clubs, groups, and individuals often work on for months. Political allusions, regional themes, classic carnival motifs, and satirical scenes alternate. The floats are accompanied by music bands, Guggenmusiken (brass bands playing lively tunes), and walking groups in imaginative costumes.
The parade starts at 2 PM and proceeds through Rosenstraße, Hauptstraße, and Untere Straße – the central streets of the market town of Ebensfeld. Spectators gather along the route, catching candies (»Kamelle«) and celebrating the traditional carnival climax before Ash Wednesday. Following the parade, the day concludes with carnival balls in local inns and the festival hall.
The market town of Ebensfeld is located on the Upper Main River in the Lichtenfels district, between the cities of Bamberg and Coburg in the state of Bavaria. With around 6,000 inhabitants, the market municipality forms an important center for the surrounding villages. The carnival tradition dates back a long way and is actively maintained by several associations – the Ebensfelder Karnevals Gesellschaft is the leading organizer.
The carnival parade on Faschingsdienstag (Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday) traditionally marks the last major highlight of the carnival season. In Ebensfeld, thousands of visitors gather, families dress up, clubs perform in their costumes, and the atmosphere is exuberant. The parade is free and suitable for all ages. After the event, lively celebrations continue in the pubs and carnival halls until midnight.
The 2026 edition of the Großer Faschingsumzug Ebensfeld falls on Shrove Tuesday, February 17 – the traditional climax of the carnival season before Ash Wednesday. The Ebensfelder Karnevals Gesellschaft once again expects numerous clubs, groups, and individuals with their self-built floats.
The parade starts at 2 PM and follows the traditional route through Rosenstraße, Hauptstraße, and Untere Straße. It is accompanied by music bands and Guggenmusiken, providing the musical backdrop. Afterwards, Shrove Tuesday concludes with carnival balls in Ebensfeld's inns and festival halls.
