Upper Franconian Brewery Festival on the Market Square — all ten local breweries on one day
Bad Staffelstein, the Upper Franconian spa town on the Upper Main River, is one of the places in Germany with the highest density of breweries per inhabitant. A total of ten breweries are active in the town and its districts — from small craft breweries to medium-sized family breweries with supra-regional distribution. The Bierbrauerfest brings them all together once a year for a joint festival on the market square.
Bad Staffelstein is located in the Lichtenfels district in Upper Franconia (Bavaria), at the foot of the Staffelberg hill and in close proximity to the famous pilgrimage church of Basilika Vierzehnheiligen. With the Obermain-Therme, the town has been known as a spa resort beyond Franconia since its recognition as a spa town. In 2026, the town is celebrating a remarkable double anniversary: 25 years as a spa town (awarded in 2001) and 40 years of the Obermain-Therme.
August 15th is an important public holiday in Bavaria and especially in Upper Franconia: Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Mary). The connection of the Bierbrauerfest with this high feast is symbolic — the central festival day combines Catholic tradition with local economic identity.
The breweries associated with the Bierbrauerfest are among the most traditional in Upper Franconia:
Three music groups accompany the Bierbrauerfest with classic Franconian music:
Every two years, the Bad Staffelsteiner Bierkönig is elected at the Bierbrauerfest — a tradition that emphasizes the festive character and provides a stage for local personalities. The election takes place publicly as part of the festival.
The 15th edition of the Bad Staffelsteiner Bierbrauerfest is a special celebratory edition: in 2026, Bad Staffelstein celebrates 25 years as a spa town and 40 years of the Obermain-Therme — both anniversaries will be integrated into the program of the 2026 festival events.
The Bierbrauerfest itself runs on Saturday, August 15th, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on the Bad Staffelstein Market Square. The ten Bad Staffelstein breweries will each operate their own stand and offer their beer specialties for tasting. In addition, there will be regional delicacies from Upper Franconian cuisine.
Three groups will provide musical accompaniment for the day: the Trachtenkapelle Ebensfeld, the Klampfengruppe der Kultur- und Freizeitfreunde, and the Musikverein Uetzing-Serkendorf — all three represent classic Franconian brass and folk music.
Expected in 2026: As this is an odd-numbered festival edition, a new Bad Staffelsteiner Bierkönig is not expected to be elected — this election takes place every two years. The next regular election is therefore not scheduled for 2026, but for the next even-numbered edition.
Bad Staffelstein is located in the Maintal valley in Upper Franconia, directly on the A 73 motorway (Bamberg–Coburg, Bad Staffelstein exit). By train from Bamberg (25 km) or Coburg (30 km) in 10–20 minutes — the train station is close to the town center.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Beer tastings, food, and drinks are paid for individually at the brewery stands.
Hotels and guesthouses in Bad Staffelstein, many related to the spa (Obermain-Therme). An extended stay with a visit to Vierzehnheiligen and Staffelberg is recommended.
