Three Days of Festivities at the Sports Field in the Maintal — »Always Ready Since 1876«
Windischletten is a district of the market town Ebensfeld in the southern Lichtenfels district, located at the transition from the Upper Franconian Maintal to the Franconian Jura. The municipality of Ebensfeld comprises twelve other districts — from Birkach to Döringstadt to Kleukheim — and geographically and culturally belongs to the lower Maintal between Bamberg and Coburg. With a manageable population but a strong club life, Windischletten is one of those classic Upper Franconian villages where the fire brigade and sports club form the pillars of public life.
The Volunteer Fire Brigade Windischletten was founded in 1876 — in the same wave of statewide brigade foundations that saw hundreds of volunteer brigades emerge in Southern Germany during the 1870s. The triggers were often devastating village fires, against which the old water pump brotherhoods were no longer sufficient. 150 years later, the brigade is not only a guarantor of fire protection but also a carrier of traditional customs: Maypole raising, Kirchweih (church consecration festival), Fasching (Carnival), summer festival — the FFW Windischletten is involved everywhere.
The festival weekend runs from Friday, June 5th, 2026, to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at the Windischletten sports field on Ziegeleistraße. The opening on Friday evening at 9 PM features a live concert by the Upper Franconian rock band Caveland — a clearly rocky statement that charmingly breaks the cliché of the "brass band only" fire brigade festival. Saturday and Sunday will feature dance groups, maypole raising with the local music club, regional musicians, and on Sunday, the grand fire brigade parade.
2026 is a distinct "Fire Brigade Festival Year" in the Lichtenfels district: In addition to Windischletten, the FFW Ebensfeld itself is celebrating its 150th anniversary (with a 3000-person festival tent and parade in mid-May), as are other brigades in the district. The Lichtenfels District Fire Brigade Association centrally lists the dates on kfv-lichtenfels.de and ensures coordination between the celebrating brigades — a mammoth task in a year with so many double anniversaries.
The region around Windischletten and Ebensfeld is located in a landscape area known as "Gottesgarten am Obermain" (God's Garden on the Upper Main) due to its churches, monasteries, and castles: Vierzehnheiligen, Kloster Banz, and Veste Lichtenfels shape the tourist identity. Visitors to the anniversary festival in Windischletten can combine the trip with a detour to one of these sights — the pilgrimage basilica Vierzehnheiligen, one of Southern Germany's most important pilgrimage sites, is just a few kilometers away.
The program follows the classic three-day structure of Bavarian brigade anniversaries, with a modern twist: Instead of starting with a brass band, the FFW Windischletten opens on Friday evening with a rock concert — the band Caveland represents Upper Franconian hard and cover rock and attracts a significantly younger audience to the festival tent.
On Saturday, the program shifts in a traditional direction: Maypole raising with the local music club, dance performances by local youth and traditional costume groups, and regional musicians in the evening. Sunday concludes the weekend with the grand fire brigade parade — featuring brigades from the entire Lichtenfels district and partner brigades from neighboring municipalities.
Current updates and staging plans will be published on the website ffw-windischletten.de and via the channels of the Lichtenfels District Fire Brigade Association.
