Upper Franconian Kirchweih Tradition

The Kirchweih – often called »Kerwa« in Franconia – is a central festival in village life in Upper Franconia. In Ebensfeld, in the Lichtenfels district, it is celebrated every year on the third Sunday in September and is a fixed date in the event calendar of the Obermain-Jura region.

Festival around the Fire Station

The venue is the fire station on Rinnigstraße. The festival weekend begins with the erection of the Kirchweih tree and an entertainment evening for young people on Friday. Saturday evening offers a program for all generations, before Sunday concludes the festivities with a traditional Frühschoppen, a warm lunch, and family activities.

Several Kerwas in the Market Area

Ebensfeld cultivates a particularly vibrant Kirchweih culture: In addition to the main Kirchweih on the third Sunday in September, the local clubs – especially the Ebensfeld Music Association with the »Grieser Kerwa« a week earlier – organize other Kirchweih festivals in the districts. Thus, the custom extends throughout the entire market area.

Community and Homeland

The Kirchweih is supported by local clubs and the voluntary village community. It stands for Upper Franconian conviviality, a sense of home, and the preservation of traditional customs in the Lichtenfels district.
