Spessart Village between Forest and Main
Windheim is a tiny district of the Spessart community Hafenlohr in the Franconian district of Main-Spessart, where the stream of the same name flows into the Main. With just under 200 inhabitants, the village is one of those quiet Spessart hamlets where the club sticks together all year round – and where the Volunteer Fire Brigade not only puts out fires but also shapes social life.
The Barbecue Evening — Tradition Instead of a Show Program
The Grillabend of FFW Windheim is not a big folk festival with a stage and marquee. It is a club evening in the classic sense: a few beer benches in front of the fire station, the brigade's grill is running at full speed, and active and passive members come together with their families. Sausages, steaks, and salads from the club kitchen land on the plates, along with draft beer and Spessart apple spritzer.
Why Go?
- Real Village Life: You won't meet tourist groups here, but the Hofmann family from next door and the firefighters from Hafenlohr, Marienbrunn, and Windheim.
- Spessart Kick-off: The barbecue evening marks the start of summer in the surrounding villages – followed by the Kirchweihen (church consecrations), the Maibaumfest (Maypole festival), and the big fire brigade anniversary of Hafenlohr.
- Hiker-Friendly: The Spessart hiking trails around the Hafenlohrgrund lead directly past Windheim. A cold half-liter after 15 kilometers of forest is part of the program here.
Getting There and Context
You can reach Windheim via state road 2315 between Marktheidenfeld and Rothenfels. Parking is available on the village meadows around the fire station. If you're arriving by public transport, take the bus from Marktheidenfeld to Hafenlohr and walk the approximately two kilometers into the Spessart valley – a worthwhile walk through the meadows along the Hafenlohrbach stream.

What is known so far
The event calendar of the municipality of Hafenlohr lists the Grillabend of FFW Windheim at the fire station for July 11, 2026. Further program details (start time, music, special features) were not yet published at the time of research – the brigade traditionally communicates them via posters in the village center, the Hafenlohr newsletter, and the FW Windheim Facebook page.
Experience from previous years
As in previous years, a start in the late afternoon, a warm buffet from the grill (sausages, steaks, shashlik), drinks served at the fire station, and a cozy end around a campfire are expected. There is usually a small bouncy castle area for the children, and the active members are happy to answer questions about their daily lives in the Spessart at the active members' table.

Getting There
By car: A3 exit Marktheidenfeld, then B26 and St 2315 towards Lohr am Main, turn off for Hafenlohr/Windheim. Parking on the outskirts of the village. By public transport: VAB bus from Marktheidenfeld to Hafenlohr, then walk.
On Site
The barbecue evening takes place around the FFW Windheim fire station in the village center. Payment is in cash; cards are not accepted here.
Tip
Combine your visit with a hike through the Hafenlohrgrund – one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Spessart.
