Spring City Festival with Green Market, Plants, and Sunday Shopping in the Rose City
Bad Langensalza, located in the heart of the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia, has borne the nickname Rose City for decades — and celebrates itself on a Sunday in May. The Green City Festival traditionally marks the start of spring in the spa town's festival calendar: the historic old town between Mühlhäuser Straße and Marktkirche becomes a green stage where gardeners, florists, craftspeople, and associations present their treasures.
The centerpiece is the Green Market: around 70 stalls offer plants, flowers, herbs, and garden ideas. In addition, regional producers present their specialties — from farm cheese to honey to liqueurs from the Hainich region. Artisans display handmade unique pieces made of wood, ceramics, and textiles, complemented by stands from nature conservation organizations, beekeepers, and social associations from the North Thuringia region.
Several stages provide music and entertainment throughout the day: bands, street musicians, and solo artists alternate, while magicians and stilt walkers roam the alleys. For families, there's a carousel, craft stations, face painting, and caricaturists. In parallel, many city center shops open their doors for Sunday shopping — from 12 PM to 6 PM, "local shopping" invites you to discover the local businesses.
The Green City Festival regularly coincides with the International Museum Day. The City Museum and the Rose Garden open their doors with special guided tours and themed city walks. Thus, the festival becomes an invitation to experience the old town of Bad Langensalza from its most beautiful — and greenest — side.
The 2026 Green City Festival once again offers its proven concept: Green Market, stage program, family program, and Sunday shopping — spread across the historic old town between Mühlhäuser Straße and Marktkirche.
