Public guided tour at the Bismarck Museum Schönhausen — Otto von Bismarck Foundation
Otto von Bismarck was born in Schönhausen (Elbe) in 1815 — at the family estate that had belonged to the Altmark aristocracy for generations. Today, Schönhausen is a small village on the Elbe in the Stendal district, just under 50 km north of Magdeburg. The former Bismarck estate is now partly publicly accessible as the Bismarck Museum and is managed by the Otto von Bismarck Foundation.
In 2026 — on Sunday, July 26 — the foundation is offering a public guided tour: "Bismarck and Schönhausen". Duration: 45 minutes, free admission. The tour not only recounts "the life of his family on the Altmark estate" and the gifts he received from political admirers but also takes "a critical look at the Bismarck myth". This dual perspective — anchored biographically and reflected historically — makes the format more than just a tourist stopover.
The Otto von Bismarck Foundation is a federally funded politician foundation with headquarters in Friedrichsruh (Schleswig-Holstein) and Schönhausen. It explicitly defines its work not as hagiography but as a historical-critical examination of Bismarck as a political figure — including his anti-democratic, socialist law-making, and colonial policy shadow sides. This critical perspective is also reflected in its guided tour formats.
Schönhausen is located directly on the banks of the Elbe in the Altmark region, in the Stendal district of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The Altmark is Saxony-Anhalt's most rural area — wide skies, brick Gothic architecture, small Hanseatic towns. The Bismarck Museum is one of the few educational sites of supra-regional importance in this otherwise rather tranquil region and, thanks to the foundation's work, has a refreshingly modern, critical profile.
45 minutes of concentrated historical education in the birthplace of one of the most influential German politicians of the 19th century. Foundation staff will guide you through the rooms and selected exhibits, contextualize biographical details, and critically analyze the widespread Bismarck myth. A tour that imparts knowledge without falling into hero worship.
