About Sommerlaune

Sommerlaune is a concert series and culture night held in the Arboretum and the historic Gottesacker (cemetery park) of Bad Langensalza in the Unstrut-Hainich district. For four Fridays in July, the historic park transforms into a stage: live concerts, acrobatics, juggling, and musical evenings turn the Arboretum, with its over 130 tree species, into a balmy summer meeting point. The highlight is the finale 'Sommerlaune Extra lang!' (Sommerlaune Extra Long!), which spans four stages as well as the Gottesacker, the Arboretum, and the cloister of the City Museum — featuring a fire show, an illuminated park, and extraordinary figures. In 2026, this series will replace the traditional Medieval Town Festival on a rotational basis, which will henceforth take place every two years.

Culture Night in the Historic Park

As the sun slowly sets on the July Fridays, the Arboretum of Bad Langensalza awakens to a unique summer life. 'Sommerlaune' is made for this: every Friday evening, rotating bands and acts perform in the park from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The audience sits among the trees, on picnic blankets, or stands with a glass of wine in front of the stage — a relaxed open-air atmosphere, more commonly found in big city parks.

The Arboretum — Bad Langensalza's Green Gem

The Arboretum is one of the city's most historically significant gardens. With over 130 tree species and expansive lawns, it offers an extraordinary concert venue. Directly adjacent is the 'Gottesacker,' an old cemetery park that has also become part of the Sommerlaune stages. This combination of botany, history, and summer programming is unique in the state of Thuringia — Bad Langensalza, located in the center of the Unstrut-Hainich district, has thus secured a firm place in Thuringia's summer calendar.

'Sommerlaune Extra lang!' — The Illuminated Finale

The highlight of the series is the last weekend of July: 'Sommerlaune Extra lang!' then extends across four stages and the entire park area of the Gottesacker, Arboretum, and the cloister of the City Museum. Various genres run in parallel — from jazz and pop to acrobatics and juggling. When darkness falls, the entire park is illuminated. A fire show marks the grand finale of the evening, which often lasts late into the night.

2026 — Sommerlaune Replaces the Medieval Town Festival

A special feature for 2026: Sommerlaune takes the place of the usual Medieval Town Festival, which from 2026 onwards will only be held every two years. The city explained that the Medieval Town Festival, in its usual scale, "is not feasible every year" — Sommerlaune thus becomes the main summer program for the spa town in 2026.

Sommerlaune — edition 2026

Sommerlaune 2026 runs on four Fridays in July, culminating in the 'Sommerlaune Extra lang!' finale. Concerts in the Arboretum and Gottesacker between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM; the finale spans four stages with acrobatics, a fire show, and an illuminated park. In 2026, the series takes over the role of the Medieval Town Festival, which will henceforth be held every two years.

Sommerlaune 2026 — Four Fridays of Park Culture

On four Fridays in July 2026, Sommerlaune will perform in Bad Langensalza's Arboretum and the adjacent Gottesacker. Each week features a different style — from jazz and singer-songwriter to pop and acrobatics. The finale on the last Friday of the month becomes an 'Extra lang!' evening: four stages, an illuminated park, a fire show.

The exact artist lineup and program schedule will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on the Bad Langensalza City Management website.
