One of the largest Walpurgis festivals in the Harz Mountains with a witch show and fire spectacle
Walpurgis Night, from April 30th to May 1st, is one of the most defining festival traditions in the Harz Mountains. Legend and folklore connect the Brocken mountain with the witches' gathering, and the region has used this narrative for decades to host folk festivals that vary greatly in size, style, and effort. Wolfshagen im Harz, a district of the town of Langelsheim, has developed into one of the most famous venues — not least because of the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut, which is considered a fixture in the Harz Mountains.
The Wolfshöhe festival grounds open in the afternoon with its own program block for families. Starting at 3 PM, the Wolfshäger Minibrut will present witch costumes and small dances, alongside magic tricks, face painting, and hands-on activities. This provides an accessible entry point to the Walpurgis tradition, engaging even younger children.
In the evening, the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut takes over the stage. The group is considered the most famous witch formation in the Harz Mountains and delivers a staged show that combines music, choreography, and traditional witch symbolism. DJ Dominic Grains and Milla Pink will be playing, and the fire spectacle Tales of Fire creates visual accents with fire performers, flame choreography, and pyrotechnics.
The highlight of Walpurgis Night is the arrival of the May Queen at midnight. With light staging and music, the transition into May is celebrated, symbolically ending the witches' reign. Wolfshagen thus integrates into the Walpurgis narrative that has been cultivated for centuries.
Wolfshagen is located in the southwestern Harz foreland and belongs to the town of Langelsheim. With the Innerste reservoir and its hiking trails, the town is a popular excursion destination, receiving additional attention through Walpurgis Night. The festival, with free admission, attracts thousands of visitors from the region and surrounding cities every year.
The clear separation between the Children's Walpurgis in the afternoon and the witch show in the evening is one of the festival's strengths. Families can plan their Walpurgis day consciously and decide which program blocks they want to experience.
The Wolfshäger Hexenbrut has become the most famous witch group in the Harz Mountains in recent years. Their staged show is the visual heart of the evening, combining music, choreography, and symbolism into a captivating performance.
