OpenAir on the last weekend of August in the medieval old town
Greding is a small Franconian town in the Roth district (Bavaria, 09576), on the northern edge of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The compact medieval old town with its market square, remnants of the town walls, Renaissance houses, and the late Gothic town parish church of St. Martin forms the backdrop for the Gredinger Altstadtfest. Those familiar with the Franconian Jura know that small towns like Greding cultivate a particularly warm festival culture — with all the town's clubs involved.
The concept of the altSTADTfest focuses on a modern open-air staging: around the market square and in the alleys of the old town, two stages are set up, with numerous bars, catering stands run by local clubs, and restaurants, standing tables, and seating areas in between. On Saturday evening, rock, pop, and cover bands dominate the stages — the festival becomes a large Volksfest (popular festival) concert in a medieval setting.
Sunday shifts down a gear and is aimed at families: performances by brass bands and music groups from the region, a children's program with hands-on activities, a cozy "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) format, and the festival winding down in the afternoon. The combination of a rocking Saturday and a traditional family Sunday makes the format attractive for the entire region — visitors from the entire Middle Franconian Basin travel here.
Greding is located at the northeastern entrance to the Altmühltal Nature Park — one of the most beautiful nature parks in Southern Germany, with Jura cliffs, juniper heaths, Celtic finds, and the Altmühl river. The Altstadtfest combines well with a hiking or cycling weekend in the Altmühltal: the festival in the evening, nature during the day. The weekend at the end of August marks the end of summer in the Franconian south — a last big festival opportunity before autumn.
On Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, 2026, the medieval old town of Greding will once again transform into a large open-air festival mile. Around the market square and in the alleys, two stages with live music, numerous bars, and catering stands run by local clubs will be set up.
The complete program for 2026 with all bands, catering stands, and special promotions will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on the City of Greding website. Free admission.
