Town festival on the first weekend of July with Unterharz Citizens' Breakfast — 10th anniversary edition and Miner's Day
When the market square of Harzgerode is equipped with a stage, stalls, and beer service on the first weekend of July, and the festival tents are set up on the Große Wiese (Great Meadow), it's time again for the Great Summer Fairy Tale — the most important town festival of the small mining town on the southern edge of the Harz. The 10th edition in 2026 is an anniversary edition: Since its establishment in the mid-2010s, the event has become a firm hallmark of Harzgerode.
A distinctive feature is the Unterharz Citizens' Breakfast — a collective breakfast event on the market square, which according to the organizers is "the largest of its kind in the Harz". Hundreds of chairs and tables are set up on the market square, where residents and visitors have breakfast together with regional products, coffee, and baked goods. The breakfast is accompanied by brass music and initial stage acts. It is the most unusual and perhaps most charming program item of the festival.
Inseparably linked to the Summer Fairy Tale is Miner's Day on Sunday, July 5, 2026. It commemorates the mining history of the Harz: Harzgerode is located in a region that was shaped by ore and silver mining for centuries, with sites like Strassberg, Neudorf, and the Selketalbahn railway. Miners in historical costume, miners' parades, and special guided tours of former mines are part of this day.
For three days, the market square stage features a packed program of live music, dance performances by local clubs, children's theater, and DJ sets in the evening. On the Große Wiese, there are carousels, bouncy castles, and a festival tent. Culinary offerings are dominated by sausages, Harz specialties (e.g., the famous Harzer Käse), and beer from regional breweries.
Harzgerode is located in the southern Harz district in the so-called Unterharz (Lower Harz), nestled between the Selke valley meadows and the dense forests of the low mountain range. With just under 8,000 inhabitants in the unified municipality, Harzgerode is one of the smaller towns in the Harz, but it has a special tourist charm with its castle complex, market square, and the adjacent Selketalbahn railway.
Small, heartfelt, Harz-style. The Summer Fairy Tale combines a traditional town festival with mining reminiscences and a collective breakfast on the market square — a very unique mix that you won't find in the big cities of Saxony-Anhalt or the larger Harz resorts. For families from the Unterharz, it's the festival weekend of the summer.
The 10th edition combines two festival concepts: the Great Summer Fairy Tale on Friday and Saturday (July 3rd-4th) and Miner's Day on Sunday (July 5th). The organizer is Deutsche Mediengesellschaft Quedlinburg in cooperation with the town of Harzgerode.
The highlight is the Unterharz Citizens' Breakfast on the market square — according to the organizers, "the largest of its kind in the Harz." Three days of stage program, carousels, a festival tent, and mining reminiscences.
