About Gievenbecker Sommersause

The Gievenbecker Sommersause is the neighbourhood festival of Münster's west. On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the Gievenbeck Mitte e.V. business association will transform Kleiner Rüschhausweg in the centre of the Gievenbeck district into a festival mile with a stage programme, attractions for children, family entertainment, and culinary offerings. Live music, club and business stalls, games for children, and a typical neighbourhood festival atmosphere characterise the event. The local business and advertising association is the organiser. Free admission.

The Neighbourhood Festival of Münster's West

The Gievenbecker Sommersause is a typical Münster neighbourhood festival – familiar, local, grown from the district's business and club community. Gievenbeck, with around 21,000 inhabitants, is one of Münster's larger districts and is located in the west of the city. Characterised by residential areas from the 1960s-1980s, its proximity to the university (students and young families), and its village past, Gievenbeck has developed into a vibrant quarter with its own identity.

Date 2026: Saturday, September 5

The Sommersause 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The venue is the central area of the district around Kleiner Rüschhausweg – a small pedestrian zone and the district's meeting point with shops, cafés, and a small market square. Open from approx. 11 am until late in the evening.

Programme and Concept

The festival programme follows the classic neighbourhood festival format:

  • Music Stage: Live bands from Münster and the Münsterland region, school choirs, dance groups
  • Club Stalls: Local sports clubs, parish communities, schools, social initiatives
  • Culinary Stalls: Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (fried potato pancakes), crêpes, pizza, international cuisine, cakes, and coffee
  • Drinks: Beer, wine, cocktails, non-alcoholic alternatives
  • Children's Programme: Bouncy castle, carousel, hands-on activities, face painting
  • Attractions: Small showmen, lucky dip wheel, tombola

Werbegemeinschaft Gievenbeck Mitte e.V.

The organiser is the Werbegemeinschaft Gievenbeck Mitte e.V. – an association of local shops and businesses dedicated to revitalising the district's centre. The Sommersause is their most important annual event. Proceeds from individual stalls partly benefit local social projects and clubs.

Gievenbeck – Students and Families Hand in Hand

Gievenbeck is sociologically interesting: young families with children, many students from the WWU Münster (especially in the northeast of the district towards Coesfelder Kreuz), and older residents who have lived here for decades reside here. The Sommersause brings these groups together – a Saturday with local flair, without any tourist staging.

The Kleiner Rüschhausweg

The Kleiner Rüschhausweg is Gievenbeck's small, pedestrian-friendly shopping street. Bakers, hairdressers, pharmacies, cafés, bookshops, drugstores, and restaurants line its few hundred metres. For the Sommersause, the street is completely closed to car traffic – stalls are set up in the middle of the asphalt, and the stage is near the market hall.
