Neighbourhood festival in Münster's west – stage music, club stalls, and culinary offerings around Kleiner Rüschhausweg
The Gievenbecker Sommersause is a typical Münster neighbourhood festival – familiar, local, grown from the district's business and club community. Gievenbeck, with around 21,000 inhabitants, is one of Münster's larger districts and is located in the west of the city. Characterised by residential areas from the 1960s-1980s, its proximity to the university (students and young families), and its village past, Gievenbeck has developed into a vibrant quarter with its own identity.
The Sommersause 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The venue is the central area of the district around Kleiner Rüschhausweg – a small pedestrian zone and the district's meeting point with shops, cafés, and a small market square. Open from approx. 11 am until late in the evening.
The festival programme follows the classic neighbourhood festival format:
The organiser is the Werbegemeinschaft Gievenbeck Mitte e.V. – an association of local shops and businesses dedicated to revitalising the district's centre. The Sommersause is their most important annual event. Proceeds from individual stalls partly benefit local social projects and clubs.
Gievenbeck is sociologically interesting: young families with children, many students from the WWU Münster (especially in the northeast of the district towards Coesfelder Kreuz), and older residents who have lived here for decades reside here. The Sommersause brings these groups together – a Saturday with local flair, without any tourist staging.
The Kleiner Rüschhausweg is Gievenbeck's small, pedestrian-friendly shopping street. Bakers, hairdressers, pharmacies, cafés, bookshops, drugstores, and restaurants line its few hundred metres. For the Sommersause, the street is completely closed to car traffic – stalls are set up in the middle of the asphalt, and the stage is near the market hall.
A typical Münster neighbourhood festival – familiar, locally rooted, without tourist pretensions. Students, families, and seniors meet on the closed shopping street for the annual Sommersause.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and attractions are paid for at the stalls.
By bus: Line 11, 12, 13 from Münster main station towards Gievenbeck, stop Rüschhausweg or Toppheideweg. By bike: Münster is Germany's cycling capital – promenade and cycle routes will get you to Gievenbeck from the city centre in 20 minutes. By car: A1 exit Münster-Nord, parking in the residential streets around the festival area (limited).
Free. Food, drinks, and attractions are paid for individually on site.
Saturday, September 5, 2026, from morning until late evening (exact hours on the event page of muensterland.de or from the Werbegemeinschaft).
For those unfamiliar with Gievenbeck: before the festival, take a walk through the courtyard streets and along Wienburgpark – it gives a good impression of the district before it transforms into the Sommersause. Families should come in the afternoon when the children's programme is in full swing.
