Traditional Schützenfest in Münster's Gievenbeck district
In the west of Münster, the Schützenverein Gievenbeck 1864 e.V. will celebrate its traditional Schützenfest in 2026: From June 19th to 21st, 2026, the king's shooting, festival parade, and king's ball will take place in the Gievenbeck district. A week earlier, on June 13th, 2026, the practice and pole crowning will be held — a prerequisite for the actual king's shot and a traditional pre-event element of Westphalian shooting clubs.
The club was founded in 1864, making it one of the older shooting clubs in the Münsterland region. Over the decades, it has developed into one of Münster's largest and most active district clubs — with its own clubhouse, shooting range, several king's shooting honors (King, Emperor, "Wooden Shoe King"), an active club life, and a football team that won the Gievenbeck clubs' cup tournament in 2025.
The King and Queen for 2025/2026 are Manni and Birgit Pöppelmann; in the same year, Rahel Lütkenhaus was crowned the first Wooden Shoe Queen in the club's history — a historic moment, as the club has been actively including women in royal honors in recent years.
The program follows the Westphalian Schützenfest schedule:
The district of Gievenbeck is located in the west of Münster, between the Coesfeld-Lette recreational area and the city center. With around 22,000 inhabitants, it is the most populous district in the Münster-West borough — growing primarily in the 1970s and 1980s as a residential area for families and university staff. It is home to parts of the University Hospital Münster, the Student Village, and several nature reserves on the outskirts.
The independent city of Münster, with almost 320,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Münsterland region and the administrative seat of the Münster administrative district. It is known for its university, the Peace Hall in the historic town hall (site of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648), and its bicycle-friendly city center. Shooting culture is particularly strong in Münster and the Münsterland — almost every district has its own shooting club and celebrates its Schützenfest annually. Gievenbeck is one of the most traditional of these district festivals.
The 2026 edition of the Gievenbeck Schützenfest follows Westphalian tradition: a prelude on June 13th with practice and pole crowning. The main festival from June 19th-21st includes the opening ceremony, king's shooting, king's ball, and a Sunday parade through the district. Organizer: Gievenbeck 1864 e.V. shooting club with its own clubhouse and shooting range. King and Queen 2025/2026: Manni and Birgit Pöppelmann.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Family program and festival parade are free. King's ball on Saturday evening requires a ticket (rates available on the club's website). Food and drinks in the festival tent are provided by the club.
By public transport: Bus lines from Münster city center run regularly to Gievenbeck (lines 12, 16, 22). By car: A1 or A43 to Münster, then B54 to Gievenbeck. Parking available on surrounding streets.
Admission to the festival tent is typically free on Family Sunday and during the morning pint (Frühschoppen). King's ball on Saturday evening requires a ticket. Exact information will be available shortly on the club's website.
The Sunday parade through Gievenbeck usually starts at midday and is freely accessible to spectators along the route.
For an authentic experience of Westphalian shooting tradition, visit the Sunday morning pint with its family program and the subsequent festival parade. The atmosphere is more family-oriented than at the large Münster folk festivals, but with significantly more club life.
