Schützenfest Gievenbeck — 160 Years of Westphalian Shooting Tradition
In the west of Münster, the Schützenverein Gievenbeck 1864 e.V. will celebrate its traditional Schützenfest in 2026: From June 19th to 21st, 2026, the king's shooting, festival parade, and king's ball will take place in the Gievenbeck district. A week earlier, on June 13th, 2026, the practice and pole crowning will be held — a prerequisite for the actual king's shot and a traditional pre-event element of Westphalian shooting clubs.
Over 160 Years of Club History
The club was founded in 1864, making it one of the older shooting clubs in the Münsterland region. Over the decades, it has developed into one of Münster's largest and most active district clubs — with its own clubhouse, shooting range, several king's shooting honors (King, Emperor, "Wooden Shoe King"), an active club life, and a football team that won the Gievenbeck clubs' cup tournament in 2025.
The King and Queen for 2025/2026 are Manni and Birgit Pöppelmann; in the same year, Rahel Lütkenhaus was crowned the first Wooden Shoe Queen in the club's history — a historic moment, as the club has been actively including women in royal honors in recent years.
Program — Tradition Over Three Days
The program follows the Westphalian Schützenfest schedule:
- Saturday, June 13th, 2026: Practice and pole crowning as a pre-event
- Friday, June 19th, 2026: Festival opening with assembly, entry into the festival tent, evening program with live music
- Saturday, June 20th, 2026: King's shooting at the range, determination of the new royal couple, evening king's ball with a dance band
- Sunday, June 21st, 2026: Festival parade through the Gievenbeck district, followed by family day in the festival tent with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), family lunch, and end of the festival
Gievenbeck — Münster's Youngest District
The district of Gievenbeck is located in the west of Münster, between the Coesfeld-Lette recreational area and the city center. With around 22,000 inhabitants, it is the most populous district in the Münster-West borough — growing primarily in the 1970s and 1980s as a residential area for families and university staff. It is home to parts of the University Hospital Münster, the Student Village, and several nature reserves on the outskirts.
Münster — University City with Shooting Culture
The independent city of Münster, with almost 320,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Münsterland region and the administrative seat of the Münster administrative district. It is known for its university, the Peace Hall in the historic town hall (site of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648), and its bicycle-friendly city center. Shooting culture is particularly strong in Münster and the Münsterland — almost every district has its own shooting club and celebrates its Schützenfest annually. Gievenbeck is one of the most traditional of these district festivals.
