About Gersweiler Kirmes

On the last weekend of August, the Saarbrücken district of Gersweiler celebrates Franco-German friendship in its own unique way: The Grenzland-Musikfest and the parallel Gersweiler Kirmes bring together music clubs from the Saarland, neighboring Lorraine, and other German states for a weekend of brass band music, amusement rides, and conviviality. The event is organized by the traditional music club Musikzug Gersweiler 1957 e.V. — the festival combines Kirmes classics with genuine club life.

A Festival of Club Life

To truly understand the Saarland, you must attend a classic village festival. The Gersweiler Kirmes with its Grenzland-Musikfest is exactly that: not a large commercial event, but a club festival supported by the local music club for decades, attracting people from the entire region. In 2025, the 38th Gersweiler Kirmes and the 58th Grenzland-Musikfest were celebrated — with roots reaching back to the 1960s.

Music Clubs from Two Countries

The heart of the weekend is the music festival. Music clubs, brass bands, and marching bands from the Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and especially from nearby Lorraine are invited — Gersweiler is only a few kilometers from the French border, making the name 'Grenzland' (borderland) quite fitting. Each club presents its own concert set, with festival parades and joint performances in between. The atmosphere is classically Franco-German: beer and Crémant, Schwenkbraten (grilled meat) and Quiche, German polkas and French marches side by side.

Kirmes as the Second Pillar

Parallel to the music festival, the Gersweiler Kirmes takes place on the festival grounds 'Am Zimmerplatz' — with amusement rides for children, classic shooting galleries, candy, and snack stands. This combination of club festival and funfair makes the event particularly attractive for families from the Saarbrücken district. While adults enjoy the concerts, the little ones can take a spin on the carousel.

The Musikzug Gersweiler — A Club Since 1957

Behind the festival is the Musikzug Saarbrücken-Gersweiler 1957 e.V., founded — as the name suggests — almost 70 years ago. The club preserves traditions, promotes young musicians, and is deeply rooted in the district. The first point of contact for all questions regarding the Kirmes and the music festival remains the club office at Kirchenstraße 1.

Gersweiler in Western Saarbrücken

Gersweiler is a district of Saarbrücken in the Saarbrücken district, located in the Köllertal valley west of the city center. The district, formerly shaped by mining, has retained its independent identity — club life, tradition, and neighborly help still play an important role here. This is precisely why the Kirmes is not a tourist attraction, but a genuine neighborhood festival.

Gersweiler Kirmes — edition 2026

The 59th Grenzland-Musikfest with the 39th Gersweiler Kirmes will take place, as every year, on the last weekend of August 2026 — likely Friday, August 28th to Monday, August 31st, 2026. The venue is the festival grounds 'Am Zimmerplatz' in the Saarbrücken district of Gersweiler, organized by the Musikzug Gersweiler 1957 e.V.

As in previous years, the weekend starts on Friday evening with the tapping of the first keg and performances by the first guest clubs. Saturday and Sunday feature the main concerts by the invited music clubs from the Saarland, Lorraine, and other regions. Monday is traditionally dedicated to the Kirmes with a family program. The exact dates and the lineup of music clubs for 2026 will likely be published on the club's website from early summer 2026.
