Whit Monday Opening of the Sittensen Watermill on the Oste River with Grinding Demonstrations and Tours
The Sittensen Watermill is picturesquely located on the banks of the Oste River at Mühlenstraße 8a. It is one of the few surviving technical monuments of water milling in the northern district of Rotenburg (Wümme). The water wheel, grinding mechanism, and sieve are partly still functional and are maintained voluntarily by the Sittensen Mill Association.
The German Mill Day has been organized annually by the German Society for Millkunde and Mill Preservation (DGM) nationwide on Whit Monday since 1994. Hundreds of water and windmills open their doors to the public on this day, showcasing technical heritage. The Sittensen Watermill joins this tradition.
If the water flow of the Oste is sufficient, the mill will be put into operation. The water wheel turns, the grinding mechanism is driven, and grain is processed into flour. The millers from the association explain the grinding process, the importance of water power, and the historical background of milling.
Guided tours explain the functioning of a historic watermill. Water wheel, main shaft, gears, millstones, sieve, hoists – the individual components are explained and demonstrated in their interplay. The tours are aimed at adults and older children.
The mill's location directly on the Oste River offers a special charm. The rushing water, the sounds of the mill technology, and the spring atmosphere on the Oste make Whit Monday a nature experience. Walks along the river are an ideal complement to the visit.
The watermill welcomes visitors all Whit Monday. Grinding demonstrations and guided tours alternate. The location by the water creates a special atmosphere.
The German Mill Day connects the Sittensen Watermill with hundreds of mills across Germany.
The exact opening hours and program for 2026 will be published by the Sittensen Mill Association in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
