Cross-border Easter Market on Palm Sunday in the Bliesgau
The German-French Easter Market between Habkirchen (municipality of Mandelbachtal, Saarpfalz-Kreis) and Frauenberg (Moselle Department) is one of the most charming spring events in the southern Saarland. Since 2001, the European Friendship Bridge over the Blies river has opened its gates once a year on Palm Sunday for a cross-border market festival that has long since become a firm fixture in the event calendar of the Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux. In 2026, the market will celebrate its 25th anniversary – a good reason to properly celebrate German-French togetherness.
Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., around 100 market stalls are spread across both sides of the Blies river. On the German side, you'll find Saarlandic producers with wood carvings, ceramics, pottery, and lovingly decorated Easter eggs. A few steps further, already on French soil, you can smell crêpes, grilled Ardennes ham, and goat cheese from Lorraine farms. Gift ideas from arts and crafts, spring flowers, honey, wine, and of course, the obligatory Easter decorations shape the assortment.
A special feature is the former customs house on the bridge, which is open as a small customs museum during the market from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. It serves as a reminder that this bridge was once a barrier and checkpoint – and is today a symbol of an open European border. With a walk across the bridge, you change countries in a few seconds without noticing: no better image for what characterizes the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve.
Local clubs, restaurateurs, and the volunteer fire departments from Habkirchen and Frauenberg provide catering in the improvised festival tents. Flammkuchen, bratwurst, cakes, and Crémant meet coffee and Saar wine. Throughout the day, music clubs from the region provide the atmosphere – a cosy spring day that gives you the feeling of being right in the heart of Europe.
Few Easter markets combine two nations, two languages, and two culinary traditions as directly as the market in Habkirchen–Frauenberg. Admission is free, the atmosphere is familiar, and the location in the middle of the UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve turns a market visit into a spring outing in one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes of the Saarland.
In 2026, the jubilee weekend falls on March 29th — Palm Sunday, when the season in the Bliesgau traditionally opens. The municipality of Mandelbachtal is the organiser in close cooperation with the Mairie of Frauenberg. Several thousand visitors from Saarland, Lorraine, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Luxembourg are expected.
The detailed daily programme with musical contributions will be published in the weeks before the market on the website of the municipality of Mandelbachtal.
Admission is free. Food and market goods are subject to a charge.
By car, you can reach Habkirchen via the A6 (exit Einöd) or the A8 (exit Neunkirchen-West) and then the B423 towards Bliesransbach/Habkirchen. Parking spaces are signposted in the town centre and along the access roads. By public transport, take the Saarbahn line to Kleinblittersdorf, and from there, continue with the Saarpfalz-Bus.
Admission is free. Dogs on a lead are welcome.
ATMs are limited – cash is recommended. Most French stalls accept Euros, of course, some also accept cards. The customs museum is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Combine your market visit with a short hike in the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – the orchards around Mandelbachtal are often already in bloom at the end of March.
