One Market, Two Countries, One Tradition
The German-French Easter Market between Habkirchen (municipality of Mandelbachtal, Saarpfalz-Kreis) and Frauenberg (Moselle Department) is one of the most charming spring events in the southern Saarland. Since 2001, the European Friendship Bridge over the Blies river has opened its gates once a year on Palm Sunday for a cross-border market festival that has long since become a firm fixture in the event calendar of the Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux. In 2026, the market will celebrate its 25th anniversary – a good reason to properly celebrate German-French togetherness.
Around 100 Stalls on Two Banks
Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., around 100 market stalls are spread across both sides of the Blies river. On the German side, you'll find Saarlandic producers with wood carvings, ceramics, pottery, and lovingly decorated Easter eggs. A few steps further, already on French soil, you can smell crêpes, grilled Ardennes ham, and goat cheese from Lorraine farms. Gift ideas from arts and crafts, spring flowers, honey, wine, and of course, the obligatory Easter decorations shape the assortment.
Customs Museum and Bridge Diplomacy
A special feature is the former customs house on the bridge, which is open as a small customs museum during the market from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. It serves as a reminder that this bridge was once a barrier and checkpoint – and is today a symbol of an open European border. With a walk across the bridge, you change countries in a few seconds without noticing: no better image for what characterizes the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve.
Enjoyment, Music, and Lived Neighbourhood
Local clubs, restaurateurs, and the volunteer fire departments from Habkirchen and Frauenberg provide catering in the improvised festival tents. Flammkuchen, bratwurst, cakes, and Crémant meet coffee and Saar wine. Throughout the day, music clubs from the region provide the atmosphere – a cosy spring day that gives you the feeling of being right in the heart of Europe.
Why a Visit is Worthwhile
Few Easter markets combine two nations, two languages, and two culinary traditions as directly as the market in Habkirchen–Frauenberg. Admission is free, the atmosphere is familiar, and the location in the middle of the UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve turns a market visit into a spring outing in one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes of the Saarland.
