The Louisenstraße as a large wine village in the Taunus
Bad Homburg vor der Höhe is one of Hesse's most elegant spa towns — Kaiser Wilhelm's favorite city, a summer residence for British high nobility in the 19th century, and today a banking center at the foot of the Taunus mountains. Its main artery is the Louisenstraße, a broad, tree-lined boulevard with a castle, the Kurhaus, and the English Church. It is precisely here – between the Kurhaus forecourt and the city center – that the town, together with WEIN365 (Michael & Kirsten Burkhart), sets up its wine festival every year in mid-May.
The Bad Homburg Wine Festival is significantly larger than most suburban wine festivals in Hesse: around 70 wine stands line the Louisenstraße for several hundred meters. The vendors include Rhenish-Hessian and Rheingau wineries, as well as Italian importers and specialty stands. WEIN365 itself presents Italian wines, Prosecco, and non-alcoholic Italian lemonades.
In 2026, the festival kicks off on Thursday, May 14th – which is Ascension Day / Father's Day. This is no coincidence: Thursday is a public holiday in Hesse, and people from Bad Homburg and Frankfurt flock to the Taunus anyway, making the Louisenstraße bustling. The opening is at 12:00 PM, followed by live music: "Swinging Soul" in the afternoon and "Hut ab" in the evening. Thursday tends to be quieter – good for tasting and conversation.
On Friday and Saturday, the festival is open daily from 12 PM to 12 AM, and on Sunday until 8 PM. The warm May atmosphere of the spa town, the cobblestone pavement of the Louisenstraße, and the evening illumination make Bad Homburg the favorite day-trip destination for Frankfurt residents during these days.
Families will find small hands-on activity stations for children throughout the festival area – the organizers intentionally maintain an atmosphere open to multiple generations. Those arriving by car can combine their visit to the Taunus Wine Day with a hike up the Großer Feldberg or a visit to the Saalburg (reconstructed Roman fort).
WEIN365 organizes the festival in collaboration with the City of Bad Homburg. A classic setup with a quiet start on Father's Day Thursday and lively evenings on Friday and Saturday.
