Traditional village Kirchweih at the Laimbachtalhalle in the Bamberg district
The Geracher Kirchweih – simply called "Kerwa" in Franconian – is the only major Kirchweih in the municipality of Gerach in the Bamberg district, nestled in the hilly Itz-Baunach hill country at the transition to the Upper Franconian Steigerwald. It takes place annually at the end of June around the Laimbachtalhalle and brings together the approximately 600 inhabitants and their guests from the surrounding area for four days.
As in many Upper Franconian villages, the Kerwa begins with the erection of the Kirchweih tree by the Gerach volunteer fire brigade. Accompanied by the Geracher Musikanten, a bratwurst and steak stand, and cool beer, the festival is solemnly opened on Friday evening. Over the weekend, dance bands, a funfair with carousels, and a church service supplement the program. The Kirchweih Sunday, with Frühschoppen, roast pork, and brass band music, is the traditional highlight.
Gerach is located in the southwestern part of the Bamberg district, not far from Baunach, Reckendorf, and the Vorderer Rhön. The village belongs to the Franconian Kirchweih tradition of Upper Franconia, which is celebrated in almost every place in the region during the summer months. The Kirchweih is part of the Kirchweih calendar of the Bamberg district and is listed alongside festivals in Baunach, Lauf, Stappenbach, and Strullendorf. The proceeds traditionally support local associations and the maintenance of the village community.
Like all Franconian Kirchweihen, the Geracher Kerwa is also a tribute to regional gastronomy: Franconian bratwurst, roast pork with dumplings, onion cake, beer from the region (Bamberg and Upper Franconian breweries), and sweet specialties are part of the mandatory program. The Geracher Musikanten and dance bands like Gitty & Ronny or Günthers Musikexpress provide the unmistakable Franconian atmosphere with polkas, waltzes, and popular hits.
The Kirchweih 2026 in Gerach spans four days and follows the proven schedule of a Franconian village Kerwa. It kicks off on Friday evening with the erection of the Kirchweih tree by the volunteer fire brigade and the opening in the festival tent at the Laimbachtalhalle.
On Saturday, the festival operations begin in the late afternoon with grilled specialties and a dance evening, traditionally performed by a regional party band. Sunday starts with a church service and the Frühschoppen by the Geracher Musikanten, followed by lunch and dance music until the evening. Monday concludes the Kerwa with a cheerful "Kehraus".
As in previous years, visitors can expect a funfair with carousels for children, bratwurst and steak stands, as well as a diverse selection of Upper Franconian beers and Franconian specialties.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and funfair payable in cash on site.
