Reckendorf in the Itz Valley
Reckendorf is located at the transition from the upper Main Valley to the Steigerwald, in the fertile Itz Valley north of Bamberg in the Bamberg district. The market town with just under 1,800 inhabitants preserves a closed medieval village center with a parish church, old farmhouses, and the typical Upper Franconian Schwemmstein construction style.
A Kerwa in the Classic Format
The Reckendorf Kirchweih is a classic Franconian village Kerwa over five days — from Thursday to Monday, with the first Sunday in September as the central highlight. The organizer is the Ortskulturring Reckendorf, an association of all village clubs (fire department, sports club, music club, church choir, marksmen).
The Typical Course of a Reckendorf Kerwa
- Thursday: Setup and preparation. In the evening, the first festival tent sing-along with regulars' table.
- Friday: Opening with beer tapping by the mayor, festival evening with a dance band.
- Saturday: Party night with a cover band, dancing in the festival tent until late.
- Sunday — Festival Day: Festive service in the parish church, parade of participating clubs through the village to the festival grounds, morning pint with brass music, festival operations in the afternoon, Kerwa dance, carousels for children.
- Monday — Kerwa Monday: quiet day with festival catering, traditional Kirwa burial in the evening.
Among the Bamberg Kirchweihen
The Kirchweih calendar for the city and district of Bamberg lists the Reckendorf Kerwa as one of the fixed autumn dates. In the Bamberg district, there is a different Kirchweih every week between May and October in one of the over 30 market towns — Reckendorf is one of those at the transition from summer to autumn, traditionally on the first weekend in September. In Reckendorf itself, there is also the Seibenbach Kirchweih (July 4th) and the Laimbach Kirchweih (September 11th–13th) in the districts.
What Makes the Reckendorf Kerwa Special
- Club Basis — supported by the Ortskulturring, meaning truly by the villagers themselves, not by commercial festival organizers.
- Metzgerei Bratwurst Grill — the local butchers are present throughout the weekend.
- Franconian Beers — on tap, from the surrounding small breweries (Lichtenfels, Bamberg, Hallerndorf).
- Reichthumb Dance Evening — on Saturday evening, one of the most attended dance events in the northern Bamberg district.
