Tip
Sunday, with the tent service and Frühschoppen, is the busiest family day — come for lunch (from 11:30 AM) for the full catering selection. If you want to experience the 'Neuer Wein': it is traditionally served from late Saturday or Sunday morning, depending on the ripeness of the grapes.
Gemmrigheimer Herbst — Swabian autumn wine festival in the Neckar valley
The Gemmrigheimer Herbst is the annual autumn wine festival of the municipality of Gemmrigheim, located in the Ludwigsburg district on the right bank of the Neckar river, between Lauffen and Besigheim. From September 12th to 14th, 2026, the Festplatz im Wörth will transform into the festival grounds. The organizer is the Musikverein Gemmrigheim e.V., which has been organizing the festival as an annual highlight of its club activities for years.
The Program Structure — Three Festival Days
- Saturday, September 12th, 2026 — Opening Evening with barrel tapping, lantern parade in the evening, and musical accompaniment by the music club
- Sunday, September 13th, 2026 — Main Program Day with ecumenical tent service in the morning, Frühschoppen, lunch, and afternoon program
- Monday, September 14th, 2026 — Festival Finale
The Barrel Tapping on Saturday
As with every Swabian wine festival, the Gemmrigheimer Herbst begins with the barrel tapping — the mayor or a representative of the music club taps the first wine barrel with a wooden mallet and officially declares the festival open. This is followed by the opening evening with a brass band and catering. The lantern parade late on Saturday evening is a particularly atmospheric program highlight — families with lanterns walk through the town, ending at the festival grounds.
Sunday — Tent Service and Frühschoppen
On Sunday morning, the ecumenical tent service takes place at the Festplatz im Wörth — a Swabian tradition that combines market, folk festival, and church life in one event. This is followed by a Frühschoppen with brass music. The entire Sunday is the day when families from Gemmrigheim and neighboring communities come to the festival — lunch, afternoon refreshments with cake and coffee, and play areas for children.
Schwaben-Döner, Onion Cake, and Brass Music
Culinary, the Gemmrigheimer Herbst focuses on the classic Swabian-Franconian autumn wine festival menu: onion cake with 'neuer Wein' (a Swabian must-have combination in September), 'Schwaben-Döner' (a modern innovation that has become a staple in many Swabian club stalls), Maultaschen, Bratwurst, Schäufele. The wines are dominated by Württemberg varieties — Trollinger, Lemberger, Riesling, Schwarzriesling, along with the special 'Neuer Wein' (young, not yet fully fermented wine) of the early autumn week.
The Music Club as the Organizer
The Musikverein Gemmrigheim e.V., with its three ensembles — Blasorchester (brass orchestra), Jugendkapelle (youth band), MusicKids — is one of the most vibrant clubs in the community. The chairman is Heiko Eisenmann. The club not only hosts the Gemmrigheimer Herbst but also other concerts and events throughout the year (year-end concert, youth serenade, winter celebration, Halloween party 'Kellerween'). The autumn festival is the most economically important club event of the year and the main source of funding for youth work.
Gemmrigheim — Typical Württemberg Neckar Community
Gemmrigheim has just under 4,000 inhabitants and is located on the right bank of the Neckar river between Lauffen am Neckar and Besigheim. The village center with its half-timbered houses and the Protestant parish church, the Neckar riverbank, and the wine-growing area rising behind the village form the image of a classic Württemberg wine-growing community. The 'Wörth', where the festival grounds are located, is a small peninsula in the Neckar — the festival grounds are surrounded by water, giving the festival weekend a special atmosphere.
