Neighbourhood street flea market in the Moers districts of Meerbeck and Hochstraß — Residents sell from front gardens and courtyards
Classic flea markets take place in a central square or hall: exhibitors pay a stall fee, set up their tables, and everything is gone in the evening. The Gedöns-Flohmarkt Meerbeck/Hochstraß reverses this logic — it turns the residential streets themselves into the flea market. Anyone who wants to participate registers with the district office and opens their front garden, driveway, or garage to the neighbourhood on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 2 PM to 5 PM. Those who want to browse simply walk through the streets and discover what's on offer.
Around 30 streets in the districts of Meerbeck and Hochstraß are participating in 2026 — a scale that makes the afternoon a real neighbourhood tour. The offerings are as diverse as the households: books, records, children's toys, kitchenware, tools, clothing, furniture, plants, homemade cakes. Some offer classic junk, others have set up mini-cafés with cakes and coffee, and still others organize small activities for children. Every front garden is a little surprise.
The Gedöns-Flohmarkt is driven by a dual mission: reuse (things get a second life instead of ending up in the trash) and encounters (residents get to know their neighbourhood, district boundaries are overcome, new contacts are made). The Stadtteilbüro Neu_Meerbeck, as the initiator, explicitly sees the format as a community-building measure in an ethnically and socially diverse neighbourhood — one that benefits from shared experiences.
Meerbeck and Hochstraß are located in the west of the city of Moers, both established in the early 20th century as mining settlements around the Rheinpreußen colliery. To this day, the typical miners' houses with front gardens, small vegetable patches, and semi-detached structures characterize the cityscape. This small-scale residential settlement structure is the ideal venue for a front-garden flea market format — compact routes, narrow streets, a dense residential population.
Anyone living in Meerbeck or Hochstraß who wants to open their front garden should register with the Stadtteilbüro Neu_Meerbeck — free of charge and with minimal effort. Visitors do not need to register and there is no admission fee: simply wander through the streets on Saturday afternoon, pick up a neighbourhood map with the participating streets (available in advance from the district office or in the neighbourhood), and explore.
The Gedöns-Flohmarkt is a summer event — in very bad weather, it will survive the elements, with many residents using gazebos. The end time of 5 PM is binding (district noise concept). Those who want to transport furniture should arrive by car or with a wagon. It is stroller-friendly — most streets have little traffic.
The 2026 edition will once again open the front gardens of both districts as flea market stalls. The Stadtteilbüro Neu_Meerbeck coordinates the participating residents and provides neighbourhood maps. The 5 PM end time is binding.
Free admission. Prices are agreed directly with residents. No stall fees for participating households.
By car: A40 or A57 exit Moers, follow signs for Meerbeck / Hochstraß. Parking on residential streets. By public transport: NIAG bus lines from Moers Hbf to Meerbeck/Hochstraß.
Saturday, May 30, 2026, 2:00 PM–5:00 PM (binding end time).
