Traditional Costume Culture of the Upper Lechgau
The Upper Lechgau Association, based in Bernbeuren, is the umbrella organization for traditional costume and folk dance clubs in the area between the Lech and Wertach rivers. Its Gautrachtenfest – also called "Gaufest" – is hosted in rotation by one of the member clubs. In 2026, Marktoberdorf, the district capital of Ostallgäu (AGS 09777), will be the host.
Program Structure of a Gaufest
A Gaufest of the Upper Lechgau Association follows a traditionally shaped sequence: It begins on Friday evening with a star march by local brass bands, as well as performances by whip crackers (Goaßlschnalzer) and guest music groups from Austria. Saturday evening focuses on the grand heritage evening with the participating traditional costume clubs and the festival band of the host town. Sunday begins with a wake-up call and a festival service, followed by the grand traditional costume and parade in the afternoon.
Participating Clubs
Over twenty traditional costume and folk dance clubs from the Upper Lechgau Association are involved, supplemented by brass bands from Marktoberdorf and the surrounding area. Additionally, there are guest clubs from Allgäu, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg. The parade on Sunday showcases a wide range of regional costumes, historical groups, and brass bands.
Marktoberdorf and the Allgäu
Marktoberdorf is located in Ostallgäu, south of Kaufbeuren, and is the seat of the district of the same name. The town sees itself as the gateway to the Allgäu and is easily accessible via the Buchloe – Füssen railway line and the B 472 federal highway. The Gaufest is part of the strong tradition of Allgäu's costume, music, and folk culture, which shapes a dense sequence of Gaufests in the region during the summer months.
