Konstanz on the Lake, in Early Summer
Konstanz is the largest city on Lake Constance, with over 84,000 inhabitants, one of the oldest universities in Baden-Württemberg, a medieval old town center, and direct access to the lake and Switzerland. The Stadtgarten – a tree-lined green space on Hafenstraße, overlooking the harbor, the lake, and the opposite Swiss shore – is the city's natural stage. At Pentecost, it becomes the festival grounds for three days.
25 Years of Kulturladen
The Open See Festival 2026 coincides with the 25th anniversary of Kulturladen Konstanz. For two and a half decades, Kulturladen has been the backbone of Konstanz's independent cultural scene – a socio-cultural center with a concert hall, event spaces, and a clear political mission: culture for everyone, accessible with low barriers and free of charge. The Open See Festival is the annual public calling card of this work.
What Characterizes the Program
The Open See Festival sees itself not as three isolated concert evenings, but as a "continuous space": stage program, small meeting zones, gastronomy, and relaxation areas are intertwined. The musical spectrum is deliberately broad: Friday evening with a focus on rock and electronic music, Saturday with neo-psychedelic and indie-rock acts, Sunday with a family program, hip-hop, and Afrobeat fusion. Contest winners and newcomers like Sydra, Flowza, 2SILENT, or Lohr regularly share the stage with established acts like Nikra, yara, or DA CRUZ.
Culinary Delights and Atmosphere
Several food trucks and stalls offer a deliberately international selection of dishes: Vietnamese Banh-mi sandwiches, regional sausage specialties, wood-fired pizza, wraps, regional Käsespätzle. The Lake Constance location adds to the experience: between sets, you can take a short walk to the lake, wade in a few steps, and then return to the stage – an experience that is only possible with this kind of casualness in Konstanz.
Funding and Anchoring
The festival is funded by the Ministry of Science and the Arts Baden-Württemberg and the Konstanz City Cultural Office, supplemented by local business partners. This public funding is the basis for keeping admission free – an important statement in a festival landscape increasingly dominated by high-priced major events.
