Literature event series in Burgenlandkreis — Special event at Kloster Memleben
The KUMBRA Literature Autumn is not a classic festival with a compact date, but a series of readings and lectures spread across the entire Burgenlandkreis and over several months. Between August and December, readings, lectures, musical-literary programs, and book talks will take place in Naumburg, Weißenfels, Zeitz, Freyburg, Bad Bibra, and smaller towns. The organizer is KUMBRA, based at Schönburger Straße 41 in Naumburg, in close cooperation with local cultural institutions, the Sparkasse, and the district administration.
On Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Literature Autumn comes to Memleben — one of the oldest and historically most significant monastery ruins in Saxony-Anhalt. Emperor Otto the Great died here in 973; Benedictine monks worked here for centuries. The lecture evening focuses precisely on this heritage: "The Knowledge Treasures of the Benedictines" illuminates how the monastic tradition of education shaped European book culture — from the work in scriptoria to the transmission of ancient texts. An event at a place where history itself becomes an argument.
The Museum Kloster und Kaiserpfalz Memleben is located in the Burgenlandkreis in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, in the municipality of Kaiserpfalz on the Unstrut river. It combines the ruins of the 13th-century monastery church with the former cloister and a modern exhibition on Ottonian history. As a venue for the KUMBRA Literature Autumn, it offers an almost unbeatable atmospheric setting — especially in November, when the cool silence of the monastery walls enhances the literary lecture.
The lecture evening in Memleben is one of the literary-historical highlights of the KUMBRA Literature Autumn 2026. In the cloister of the former Benedictine monastery, the spiritual heritage of the monks will be discussed — their library tradition, their role as preservers of ancient texts, and their educational organization that shaped medieval Europe.
