Democracy Open Air at Hambach Castle with concerts, debates, hands-on activities, and free admission
On May 27, 1832, thousands of people marched from the market town of Hambach up to the then-dilapidated Maxburg Castle to demonstrate for freedom of the press, national unity, and popular sovereignty. The Hambach Festival is considered one of the most important events in German democratic history and the birth of the black-red-gold flag as a symbol of the freedom movement. The Hambach Castle Foundation keeps this heritage alive: through the permanent exhibition "Up, up to the Castle!", through educational programs, and through the annual open-air festival at the end of May.
The modern Hambach Castle Festival is deliberately designed as a civic festival with low barriers to entry. Admission is free, the program is aimed at all generations, and political discussion finds its place alongside music, games, and enjoyment. On the various plateaus of the castle grounds — inner courtyard, festival meadow, bastion — several stages and action areas run in parallel.
Typical program components include: Live concerts of pop, singer-songwriter, and classical music; talk rounds with politicians, journalists, and activists on current democracy topics; cabaret and readings; a family and children's area with hands-on activities related to democracy, history, and nature. Palatinate vintners and restaurateurs provide regional catering.
With the ZDF "Löwenzahn" construction trailer, which will be on site in 2026, the festival focuses on experiencing democracy and history for children. Playful stations explain fundamental rights, freedom of expression, or how to deal with diversity — low-threshold political education that doesn't wag an admonishing finger.
The 2026 edition will be held on the plateaus, in the inner courtyard, and on the large festival meadow of Hambach Castle. Several stages, discussion tents, and action areas will run in parallel throughout the day; visitors can switch freely between the offerings. The Hambach Castle Foundation is bringing together contributions from regional cultural creators, political foundations, educational institutions, and gastronomic partners from the Palatinate.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Hambach Castle Foundation on hambacher-schloss.de/1832dasfest. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Free admission. Food and drinks, and possibly individual workshops, at fixed prices on-site.
Hambach Castle is located above the Hambach district of Neustadt. By train to Neustadt (Weinstr) main station, then take the Schloss-Linie (bus) up or hike up in about 45 minutes. By car: A65 exit Neustadt-Süd, follow signs for festival parking.
Admission to the festival is free. Food and drinks are paid for on-site at the catering stands.
Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, as the castle grounds are terraced and partly unpaved. Dogs are allowed on a short leash.
Children's and family activities all day; accessible areas in the inner courtyard and on the main plateaus.
