Sun telescopes, Bronze Age, and Uni-Jazz at the find site of the Nebra Sky Disk
In 1999, two treasure hunters found a bronze object in the forest above Nebra (Unstrut) that electrified archaeology worldwide: the Nebra Sky Disk. Dated to around 1600 BC, it is considered humanity's oldest concrete representation of the cosmos and is housed in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (UNESCO World Heritage). At the actual find site, on the Mittelberg, the Burgenlandkreis district built a futuristic visitor center: the Arche Nebra. The original artifact is not exhibited here — but the story of its discovery, the context of Bronze Age astronomy, and the entire magical location are.
Since 2024, the summer solstice has been celebrated with a public summer festival — a logical addition to the program, as the Nebra Sky Disk is believed to symbolize precisely these astronomical turning points. The visitor center opens at 10 am, the observation tower until 10 pm, and the entire day is dedicated to the Bronze Age and astronomy. Sun telescopes are available for direct observation of the sun's surface, experiments explain the movement of light, and special guided tours explore the temporary exhibition 'Von Zeit zu Zeit' (From Time to Time).
The festival is accompanied musically by the Uni-Jazzband Halle — relaxed, summery university jazz under the open sky. Visitors can climb the observation tower at the find site and watch the sunset over the Unstrut landscape late into the evening. The view extends far into the Burgenland and the Saale-Unstrut wine region — one of the most beautiful natural backdrops in Saxony-Anhalt.
Admission to the festival is free. The Burgenlandkreis district and Arche Nebra aim to share the fascination of the Bronze Age as widely as possible — families are explicitly welcome, as are school classes and anyone who wants to spend a special summer day in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Those who have never visited Arche Nebra should take the solstice as a perfect introduction to one of Central Germany's most unusual archaeological sites.
On Friday, June 26, 2026, Arche Nebra invites you to the 3rd edition of the Summer Festival for the Summer Solstice. From 10 am to 7 pm, the visitor center is completely free to enter, and the observation tower can be climbed until 10 pm. Planned are public guided tours of the Arche, a concert by the Uni-Jazzband Halle, the special exhibition 'Von Zeit zu Zeit', and observations of the sun's surface with sun telescopes.
By car via the B250 or B176. Arche Nebra is located on the Mittelberg hill above Nebra (Unstrut), address: An der Steinklöbe 16. Paid parking is available directly at the visitor center. By train to Nebra, then bus or taxi.
Visitor Center: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM / Observation Tower until 10:00 PM.
Completely free (for the summer festival). Temporary exhibitions are also freely accessible during the summer solstice.
Sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle. Sturdy footwear for the walk from the visitor center to the find site.
