Club anniversary with a festive weekend on the Elbe in Jerichower Land
When a sports club in an East German village celebrates its 100th birthday, it's more than just a club anniversary – it's a piece of local history. Hohenwarthe, a picturesque district of the municipality of Möser in Jerichower Land, has been connected to the local angling club since 1926. Behind the Hohenwarthe Waterway Crossing, where the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe meet, the club has maintained fishing spots over the decades, taught young anglers the craft, and recruited new members for water conservation.
2026 will be a grand celebration. From May 29th to 31st, the festival grounds at the edge of the village will transform into a three-day stage: a festival tent, fishing competition, festive parade, fish feast, and family program. The club – with a good 100 active members, it remains one of the most vibrant sports communities in the district – is planning a jubilee that will also include friendly clubs along the Elbe.
Friday will kick off with the ceremonial opening, including the tapping of the first keg, a speech by the mayor, and an opening dance night in the festival tent. Saturday is dedicated to the fishing competition: members will compete for the anniversary trophy at the club's fishing waters, while simultaneously, the market opens on the festival grounds with fish sandwiches, grilled smoked fish, and of course, Hohenwarthe beer. Sunday belongs to the festive parade: club banners, traditional costume groups, decorated floats, and the friendly shooting guild from the neighboring village will march through Hohenwarthe.
Hohenwarthe is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in close proximity to the Magdeburg Waterway Crossing – an engineering marvel featuring Europe's longest trough bridge. Those who combine the festive weekend with an excursion can experience both: pure club life at the festival grounds and one of Germany's most famous hydraulic engineering structures just a few hundred meters away.
Over the Pentecost weekend, from May 29th to 31st, 2026, the Hohenwarthe Angling Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Three days of festivities are planned, including an opening, a dance night, a fishing competition, a festive parade, and a family program. Detailed times will be announced in spring 2026 via the municipality of Möser.
