Indian Color Festival on the MDCC-Parkbühne in Elbauenpark
The Holi festival is one of the most important religious festivals in the Hindu calendar, celebrated at the beginning of spring. Over the last 15 years, it has developed into a secularized festival format internationally: with loud music, thousands of people synchronize throwing colorful, food-grade color powder into the air. Several organizers tour Germany with this concept through major cities — and Magdeburg has been a regular stop for years.
In the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, the Holi takes place on the MDCC-Parkbühne, an open-air stage in the expansive Elbauenpark. The park was created for the Federal Garden Show in 1999 and has since been Magdeburg's most important open-air area — concerts, family festivals, a climbing park, and Holi.
The concept is well-established: starting in the afternoon, several DJs one after another, with synchronized countdowns at regular intervals, during which all participants simultaneously throw their color powder bags into the air. Within seconds, the entire area is immersed in a colorful cloud. Those who arrive in white clothing come out the most colorful.
The color powder bags are sold exclusively on-site by the organizer. The powder consists of corn and rice flour, is food-grade, water-soluble, and therefore easy to wash out. Bringing your own powder is prohibited for safety and environmental reasons.
With a day ticket price of €24.85, Holi Magdeburg is one of the more affordable festival formats in the Saxony-Anhalt summer. The organizer is Elbecon Event & Concert GmbH, which programs several summer concerts under the umbrella of the Magdeburg-Tourist brand MDCC-Parkbühne. The atmosphere remains family-friendly — the organizers consciously aim for a youthful, but not exclusively young, audience mix.
The organizer is Elbecon Event & Concert GmbH. The event is part of the Germany-wide Holi Festival tour, which visits several major cities every summer. The MDCC-Parkbühne in Elbauenpark, with its expansive green area, offers the ideal backdrop for this colorful format.
