Radical live: ten days of experimental, Afro, Jazz, Kraut, Improvisation in a former gasworks settlement
The Gaswerk Music Days are a young festival format that started in 2023 in the former Berlin-Lichtenberg gasworks settlement. Concept: a program played "radically live", prioritizing experiments, improvisation, and live music in the strictest sense. Not just a club event, not a dance open-air routine — but an intense festival for listeners who want to listen.
The gasworks settlement on Blockdammweg in the Karlshorst district (Lichtenberg borough) is an architectural gem: built in the early 20th century for the workers of the Berlin gasworks, now a listed building. The festival uses several spaces on the premises — two stages, both a mix of outdoor and indoor, plus bar areas and a foyer. The acoustics of the former industrial buildings and the outdoor area with pine trees and old walls create a special atmosphere.
What structurally distinguishes the Music Days is their organization into thematic nights:
The 2026 lineup features experienced avant-garde acts: Embryo (German Krautrock classic), Burnt Friedman, MC Yallah & Scotch Rolex (Ugandan-Japanese Hip-Hop), Ancestral Futures, NSI as a duo of Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer. A total of over 30 acts on two stages, spread over two weekends. Those looking for predictable headliner open-airs are in the wrong place — those who want to hear African diaspora Jazz alongside German drone pioneers are in the right place.
Unlike Berlin's commercial mega-festivals, the Music Days festival is a community production by the residents and cultural creators of the gasworks settlement. This shapes the atmosphere — approachable, dialogue-oriented, without pyrotechnics or show business staging. The bar is partly run by the collective itself, and the food comes from regional suppliers. Late summer festival with a neighbourhood atmosphere.
The 4th edition confirms the proven format: two consecutive weekends, from Friday to Sunday of the first week (July 24–26), then a week's break, followed by the second weekend from Friday to Sunday (July 31 – August 2). Online sales are closed, but box office is usually possible; many individual events release remaining spots via lottery.
