Sonorous open-air finale of the Mosbacher Sommer in the historic half-timbered old town
The Mosbacher Sommer is the annual event series of the Große Kreisstadt (major district town) between July and September: open-air cinema, street theater, open-air concerts, light festival. The festive conclusion for years has been the Gassen-Musik-Fest in September — a concept that directly uses the topography of Mosbach's old town as a stage. Instead of one large central stage with a single program, the entire old town is activated simultaneously.
The Gassen-Musik-Fest has a clear concept: Many small stages, many bands, simultaneously. In the inner courtyards, in front of the half-timbered houses, on the market square, in the narrow old town alleys, in front of the collegiate church — someone is playing everywhere. You move freely through the city, every corner has its own sound. One band plays acoustic folk, in the next alley jazz, three steps further a soul singer, then a brass band, then a singer-songwriter. Sound carpet instead of a main stage.
Usual genre mix at the Gassen-Musik-Fest: Jazz, Blues, Acoustic Folk, Soul and Funk, World Music, Singer-Songwriter, Brass and Marching Bands, Classical Ensembles in the churches. Bands from Mosbach and the Neckar-Odenwald district, from Heidelberg and Mannheim, often guests from the Black Forest or Hesse. Local school bands and university ensembles, alongside professional acts.
Mosbach's gastronomy opens outdoor seating areas, restaurants place tables in the alleys, food stalls serve bratwurst, crêpes, burgers, pizza, regional specialties. Cocktails, regional wine, beer, non-alcoholic options. Atmosphere: relaxed, summery, chill — as if the whole city were an open-air lounge.
The beauty of the Gassen-Musik-Fest: you simultaneously experience Mosbach's old town. The city is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Southern Germany — over 100 preserved half-timbered buildings, the famous Palmsches Haus (1610), the market square with the town hall, narrow winding alleys, the collegiate church, the historic main square. At dusk with the first lights and live music from every corner, an atmosphere develops that you will hardly find elsewhere in Southern Germany.
The Gassen-Musik-Fest concludes the Mosbacher Sommer 2026 — a series that includes open-air cinema, street theater (Mosbacher Sommer Straßentheater), concerts (e.g., the announced concert with The BossHoss), the light festival, and children's events between July and September. Main sponsors are Sparkasse Neckartal-Odenwald, Live Art Light Systems, and BGV insurance.
Free admission — all stages are free. You don't need a festival wristband or a ticket. Cash for food/drinks. Sturdy footwear (cobblestones), a sweater for the later evening (September nights get cool).
