Summer festival of the music association in the courtyard of a Bavarian monastery
Kloster Thierhaupten was founded in the 8th century by the Benedictines and is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Bavaria. After secularization in 1803, the area was transformed into a cultural center with a restaurant, club rooms, and a festival hall. The baroque courtyard, surrounded by monastery walls on four sides, is the intimate setting for the annual garden festival of the music association.
The Musikverein Thierhaupten 1863 e.V. is one of the oldest music associations in Bavarian Swabia. Its garden festival, held every two years, is one of the most important club events and also a source of income that finances instruments, youth work, and rehearsal activities. Several ensembles from the association perform over the weekend – from the youth band to the wind class to the main band.
Bratwurst, Schäuferla, Steckerlfisch, accompanied by beer from the local innkeeper, wine from the Swabian wine region, and homemade cakes characterize the catering. The seating with long beer garden benches in the monastery courtyard creates a familiar, almost village-like atmosphere.
Thierhaupten is located on the Lech river, in the historic Lechrain – a cultural landscape that mediates between Bavarian Swabia and Old Bavaria. The garden festival is embedded in a summer tradition of parish festivals, monastery events, and music association dates that shape the Lechrain weekend.
In 2026, the gates of Kloster Thierhaupten will once again open for the traditional garden festival of the local music association. Opening on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 6:00 PM with the opening concert by the main band; Sunday, June 28, is dedicated to the Frühschoppen (morning pint), families, and the youth band.
The main band of the music association opens the festival on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the youth band and wind classes will perform for the younger audience, and traditionally, a neighboring music association will also be featured. The program will be spread across the main pavilion in the monastery courtyard.
