Grand Garden Festival in Rococo Ambiance
Schloss Wilhelmsthal near Calden, north of Kassel, is considered one of Germany's most beautiful Rococo castles. It was built starting in 1747 for Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel according to plans by François Cuvilliés and Simon Louis du Ry. The extensive park with historic avenues, water features, and baroque landscaping forms the backdrop for the annual Gartenfest Kassel, which has been held here every Ascension Day since the early 2000s.
The Gartenfest is curated and organized by Evergreen GmbH. Around 160 carefully selected exhibitors present rare plants, garden decorations, garden furniture, sculptures, home accessories, and culinary specialties. In 2026, a new exhibitor area with a direct view of the castle will be set up for the first time – an invitation for exhibitors to engage creatively with the park.
Characteristic of the Gartenfest are its many small details: a nostalgic photo bus, baroque performers in the park, a bubble artist, a dedicated family and children's area, and a food court with artisanal vendors (bakery with homemade cakes, vegetarian options, meat specialties). Children under 17 have free admission.
The festival traditionally runs from Ascension Day (Thursday) to the following Sunday, spanning four days. The long weekend is a popular date for day-trippers from the Rhine-Main region and North Hesse.
Evergreen GmbH organizes several garden festivals in Germany – including events at other historic locations besides Kassel. However, the Gartenfest Kassel at Schloss Wilhelmsthal is considered the flagship of the series due to its Rococo setting and, with over 160 exhibitors, is one of Germany's largest garden events.
The Gartenfest traditionally runs over the extended Ascension Day weekend. Organizer: Evergreen GmbH. Tickets via Reservix and gartenfestivals.de.
