Halle's oldest documented folk festival — Reformation tradition on the Würfelwiese
Garlic Wednesday is one of Germany's most peculiar and oldest folk festivals. Its origins trace back to the Kaland Brotherhood – a religious fraternity in medieval Halle that met on the Wednesday after Pentecost before the Reformation, shared a meal, and consumed an unusual amount of garlic. After the Reformation in 1542, the brotherhood was dissolved, but the meal survived as a civic custom.
For centuries, the citizens of Halle met on the Wednesday after Pentecost for a garlic meal on the Würfelwiese, a meadow area on the banks of the Saale river in the city center. Memories of the custom persisted even through the GDR era, though the actual festival disappeared. In 2002, Garlic Wednesday was revived by a newly founded Garlic Wednesday Society — and has taken place annually ever since.
The festival begins in the morning with the traditional procession of the Garlic Wednesday Society, whose members appear in historical costume. The ceremony opens on the Würfelwiese: welcoming speeches, reading of the statutes, tapping of the festival beer, and of course — as a culinary hallmark — a garlic dish with garlic soup, garlic sausage, garlic bread, and Halle specialties. Live music, a small market, and a relaxed meadow picnic atmosphere make the festival a cozy half-day event.
Garlic Wednesday is not a major tourist event, but rather a custom that fosters identity among Halle's citizens. Those interested in the unusual festival traditions of Saxony-Anhalt — from the Halloren salt workers to the Reformation customs in Lutherstadt Wittenberg — will find a particularly original event here. The Würfelwiese on the Saale's flood embankment offers a relaxed atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the market square. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Garlic Wednesday is a small but precious piece of living history.
On the Wednesday after Pentecost 2026 (May 27), the Garlic Wednesday Society invites you to the annual celebration on the Würfelwiese. The program follows the revival from 2002 and draws on pre-Reformation traditions.
