About Hansefest Halle

At the end of May, Halle (Saale) commemorates its membership in the Hanseatic League on the Saale promenade: for 200 years, from 1281 to 1479, the city was a Hanseatic city. The Hansefest brings medieval markets, swordsmen, sporting competitions, and culinary specialties to the Riveufer.

A Forgotten Hanseatic City

Even many residents of Halle today no longer know that Halle (Saale) was once a Hanseatic city. But from 1281 to 1479 – for almost 200 years – the city belonged to the powerful Hanseatic League. Salt and cloth trade were the drivers: Halle merchants traveled to Lübeck, Hamburg, and across the Baltic Sea, with salt chests and cloth bales in their luggage. Saale shipping connected Halle with the Elbe and thus with the northern economic area.

This very history comes alive once a year at the end of May on the Riveufer and along the Saalepromenade. The Hallischer Hanse e.V., founded in 2008, organizes the Hansefest, which takes place annually from early to late May between Giebichenstein Bridge and Klaustor. For two days, the section of the Saale transforms into a medieval Hanseatic market with camps, crafts, music, and mock combat.

Swordsmen, Competitions, and Salt Chests

Hanseatic merchants set up their camps on the festival grounds, blacksmiths work on glowing iron, archers and swordsmiths demonstrate their craft. Swordsmen and archers engage in mock combat, and minstrels wander through the stalls with hurdy-gurdies and shawms. Replicas of Hanseatic cogs paddle on the Saale and engage in small competitions – a salt chest race has been a humorous highlight for years.

Culinary Delights and Family Program

The catering follows the concept: grilled skewers, flatbread, mead, and beer from the barrel, regional cheese, and fried carp. Families will find a dedicated children's area with archery for younger ones, throwing tent games, and a small medieval school where children can learn ancient crafts like writing, felting, or pottery. Anyone visiting Halle in the spring – after all, it's the second-largest city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt – should definitely plan this festival weekend.

Hansefest Halle — edition 2026

The Hallisches Hansefest will take place on May 30 and 31, 2026, on the Riveufer and along the Saalepromenade. Two days of medieval market, mock combat, competitions, and Hanseatic culinary delights under the motto 'From Men's Day to Children's Day in Hanseatic Times'.

On May 30 and 31, 2026, Hallischer Hanse e.V. invites you to the annual Hansefest on the Saale. Camps will be set up along an approximately 800-meter stretch between Giebichenstein Bridge and Klaustor, with mock combat and medieval crafts on display. Open from 10 AM to 6 PM. Free admission.
