Traditional three-day Kirchweih festival on the first weekend of September in the Odenwald foothills
Gaiberg is a community of around 2,500 inhabitants in the Rhein-Neckar district (state of Baden-Württemberg), located at an altitude of about 400 meters in the Kleiner Odenwald (Lesser Odenwald) southeast of Heidelberg — a wooded hilly landscape with wide views into the Rhine Valley. Despite its proximity to the university city of Heidelberg (only a 15-minute drive), Gaiberg has retained its rural character — and the annual Kerwe is one of the village's central social events.
A Kerwe (also Kerb, Kirwe, or Kirchweih) is an annual church consecration festival — the anniversary celebration of the parish church, which over the centuries has become a general village festival. The Palatinate Kerwe has some peculiarities: it usually lasts three days (Saturday to Monday), begins with the erection of the Kerwebaum (a decorated wooden pole), includes a festive Kerwe church service on Sunday, and often ends with the ritual burial of a Kerwe doll (or Kerwemoschder) on Monday — symbolizing the burial of the festival until the following year.
The Gaiberger Kerwe takes place in the central Rathaushof (town hall courtyard) and the adjacent village center. Benches and tables are set up, an open stage is erected, catering stands from the clubs, and a small amusement area with a children's carousel. The atmosphere is deliberately family-friendly — not a mass event, but a gathering where the whole village celebrates together with guests from Bammental, Wiesenbach, and Heidelberg.
Over the three festival days, a tried-and-tested program runs:
The Gaiberger Kerwe 2026 follows the traditional Palatinate Kerwe structure and the proven timing and sequence of events from previous years. On Saturday, the festival opens in the afternoon from 3:00 PM in the town hall courtyard — live music by regional bands and catering by the clubs characterize the evening. Sunday begins at 11:00 AM with the morning pint, the Kerwe church service, and the family day. Monday from 11:30 AM, the festival winds down with a morning pint and lunch specials.
The exact band performances, catering clubs, and program points for 2026 will be announced by the municipality of Gaiberg in advance on gaiberg.de.
