Rohrbach Kerwe — Heidelberg District Festival with Unique Traditions
From September 4th to 6th, 2026 — the first weekend in September — the southern Heidelberg district of Rohrbach transforms into a festival mile. The Rohrbach Kerwe is one of Heidelberg's oldest and most traditional district Kirchweihen — and at the same time one of the most distinctive. The festival preserves a series of customs found only here in this form, shaping Rohrbach's identity: the traditional barrel tapping with cannon shot on Friday evening, the stage program in several halls, and the unique Kälbelestanz on Sunday.
The Festival Grounds — Three Venues
The festival is spread across three areas in Rohrbach's town center:
- Eichendorffhalle — the district's larger hall, hosting stage programs, live concerts, and major events
- Alter Rathausplatz (Old Town Hall Square) — the historic market square of the once independent village of Rohrbach, with open-air catering and a stage
- Achim-von-Arnim-Straße — the district's main street with market stalls, amusement rides, and outdoor dining
This tripartite division allows for simultaneous programming in several locations — you can stroll, switch between venues, and experience the full spectrum.
Barrel Tapping and Cannon Shot on Friday Evening
The opening on Friday, September 4th, 2026, is a moment steeped in tradition. On the Old Town Hall Square, representatives of the District Association and TSG Rohrbach tap the first barrel — and at the same moment, a traditional cannon shot rings out through the district. This custom has been the opening signal for the Rohrbach Kerwe for generations and is a hallmark of the festival. Residents of the surrounding streets know exactly when the Kerwe begins — not by posters, but by the cannon shot.
The Kälbelestanz — The Unique Sunday Tradition
Arguably the most unusual program item of the Kerwe is the Kälbelestanz on Sunday. It is a folkloric dance where masked dancers, in the tradition of the "Kälbele" — a South German masked figure, often with a wooden head and cowhide costume — perform a choreographed dance. The exact origin is lost in folklore; all that is clear is that this variant of the "Kälbelestanz" is cultivated in Heidelberg-Rohrbach and cannot be found elsewhere in this form. Here you will experience a living piece of district folklore that the people of Rohrbach proudly maintain.
Club Catering and Musical Program
Over the three days, Rohrbach's clubs — TSG Heidelberg-Rohrbach, the District Association, the fire department, church communities, school support groups — provide catering at the various venues. Classic folk festival specialties: Bratwurst, Schweinshaxen, Pommes (fries), Crêpes, accompanied by wine from nearby Pfalz or Kraichgau, and beer from a Heidelberg brewery. Cover bands, Schlager artists, jazz combos, and dialect singers perform in the Eichendorffhalle and on the open-air stage at the Old Town Hall Square.
Rohrbach and Heidelberg — From Farming Village to District
The district of Rohrbach is located in the south of Heidelberg, between the city center and the district of Boxberg/Emmertsgrund. Until 1927, Rohrbach was an independent municipality in the Grand Duchy of Baden — the Alter Rathausplatz still recalls this self-governance today. With its incorporation in 1927, Rohrbach became a Heidelberg district that retained its own character. Today, around 15,000 inhabitants live here — a mix of long-time Rohrbach residents, university members, and families. The Kerwe is an expression of this preserved district identity.
Heidelberg — University City on the Neckar
Heidelberg, with around 160,000 inhabitants, is a university city on the Neckar, famous for its castle, Hauptstraße, Old Bridge, and university (founded 1386). However, the district identity — in places like Rohrbach, Handschuhsheim, Wieblingen, or Schlierbach — remains strong, and the district Kerwen are authentic Heidelberg festival traditions beyond the main tourist streams.
