About Boxberg Neighborhood Festival
Boxberg Neighborhood Festival — edition 2026
Program 2026
As every year on the last Saturday of June, Haselnussweg in Heidelberg-Boxberg transforms into a festival mile. The Boxberg associations — sports club, youth fire brigade, church communities, kindergartens — participate with stands, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Bands and choirs from the district perform on the small stage.
The neighborhood association also uses the festival as an annual platform to welcome new residents and inform them about current neighborhood development topics.

Boxberg — Heidelberg's Green Heights
The Boxberg district is located in the south of Heidelberg on a wooded hill on the Boxberg plateau, with views over the Neckar valley and the Königstuhl. With around 6,600 inhabitants, Boxberg is one of Heidelberg's greenest districts — characterized by single-family and terraced houses from the 1960s and 70s, nestled amidst extensive woods and meadows. Boxberg is connected to the mountain railway and the city center by tram — a mix of suburban tranquility and urban proximity.
The Neighborhood Festival in Haselnussweg
The Neighborhood Festival in Haselnussweg takes place every year on the last Saturday of June — in 2026, this will be Saturday, June 27, 2026. The venue is the central Haselnussweg, a quiet residential street that is closed off for the festival and transforms into a small festival mile. Here, a stage, stands, seating areas, and play activities are lined up — embedded in the familiar neighborhood scenery.
The Associations Play the Leading Role
As with most Heidelberg neighborhood festivals, the associations are the main actors. They provide the catering stands, organize the stage program, and the activities for children. The Boxberg Neighborhood Association (Stadtteilverein Boxberg e.V.) (founded several decades ago) coordinates everything in partnership with the Boxberg Neighborhood Management. Participants include, among others, the Boxberg Youth Fire Brigade, the Heidelberg-Boxberg Sports Club, the Catholic and Protestant church communities, and the kindergartens and the primary school on Bothebach.
Program Components
The typical neighborhood festival program in Boxberg consists of several recurring components:
- Afternoon Opening by the board of the neighborhood association and the neighborhood management
- Sports Demonstrations by the sports club (children's gymnastics, aerobics, karate demo)
- Youth Fire Brigade Demonstration with a firefighting display and hands-on activities
- Stage with Live Music, local bands, and children's choirs
- Children's Program with face painting, bouncy castle, craft table
- Catering Stands of the associations with sausages, fries, salads, cakes, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks
Why It Matters
Neighborhood festivals like Boxberg's are not highlights on the supra-regional event calendar — but they are the backbone of Heidelberg's neighborhood culture. They bring communities together, help new residents connect with the local associations, and create opportunities for intergenerational encounters. The neighborhood festival in Haselnussweg is exemplary for this function — not a tourist magnet, but for the approximately 6,600 residents of Boxberg, one of the highlights of the year.
