Traditional water tournament on the Nahe river at the Roseninsel with historical roots
The Fischerstechen looks back on a long tradition connected to the importance of the Nahe river for Bad Kreuznach. The city lies on the river, which provided its drinking water, mill power, and transport route. From the importance of water for urban life, the Fischerstechen emerged as a ritual competition that has preserved its sporting character over the centuries.
In a Fischerstechen competition, two opponents stand on flat, narrow boats moved by rowers. Armed with a long, padded pole, they try to push each other off the boat into the water. Whoever maintains their balance wins. The competition requires physical control, skill, and a good eye.
In Bad Kreuznach, competitions are held in several categories. There is a youth competition, a men's competition, and a women's competition. In addition, there are team competitions on Saturday from midday, in which teams compete against each other. This creates a dense program of competitive duels spread over the weekend.
Alongside the sporting events, there is a festive atmosphere at the Roseninsel during the festival days. Friday begins from 5 p.m. with stalls and music to kick off the weekend. Saturday and Sunday focus on the competitions, with food, wine, and beer available. The Roseninsel and the riverside promenades along the Nahe form the natural spectator area.
The Fischerstechen 2026 continues the Bad Kreuznach tradition and promises another spectacular water tournament on the Nahe river. Three days of festival with competitions, festive atmosphere, and catering at the Roseninsel.
The exact program for 2026, including participant lists, will be published by the city of Bad Kreuznach and the Fischerstech association in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
