Traditional Christmas market at Waagplatz with crafts and music since 1980
The Fürth Old Town Christmas Market stands out from many other Christmas markets due to its distinct craft character. Since its premiere in 1980, the festival has been supported by the Altstadtverein St. Michael, a purely volunteer association. The venue is Waagplatz in the heart of the historic old town of Fürth – a picturesque ensemble of historic burgher houses under the striking spire of St. Michael's Church. Expansion areas extend into Waagstraße and the association's own 'Freibank', a restored old town house.
A central feature is the live demonstration of traditional crafts: glassblowers, blacksmiths, and woodcarvers showcase their skills before the eyes of visitors. A separate stage hosts an extensive cultural program with children's and adult choirs, brass ensembles, singers, and jazz formations. Each of the ten market days has its own program – the Old Town Christmas Market is therefore less a pure consumer market and more a cultural weekly program.
The mulled wine comes from regional vintner Heindel, accompanied by Fürth sausages and winter specialties. A special feature: all proceeds from food and beverage sales go towards the maintenance of the Freibank and restoration projects in Fürth's old town. The market is thus simultaneously a cultural event and a monument preservation initiative.
Fürth, with around 130,000 inhabitants, is the third-largest city in Middle Franconia (after Nuremberg and Erlangen), belongs to the state of Bavaria, and is located in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. The historic old town around St. Michael is a gem of medieval urban architecture, which the Old Town Christmas Market showcases in a special way – Fürth's popular and 'small' alternative to the large Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt next door.
From December 4 to 13, 2026, the Fürth Old Town Christmas Market will open its stalls for the 44th time on Waagplatz, in Waagstraße, and in the association's own Freibank. The organizer is the Altstadtverein St. Michael, which organizes the entire festival on a volunteer basis.
Ten market days around the 2nd Advent weekend offer a continuously changing cultural program: children's and adult choirs, brass ensembles, singers, and jazz formations perform on a separate stage. Glassblowers, blacksmiths, and woodcarvers demonstrate their art, mulled wine from Fürth vintner Heindel, Fürth sausages, and winter specialties characterize the culinary offerings. All proceeds from food and drinks go towards the maintenance of the Freibank and restoration projects in the historic old town of Fürth.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the stalls at usual Christmas market prices: Mulled wine €4-5, sausage €4-5, punch and specialties at usual association prices. All proceeds go towards the maintenance of the Freibank and old town restoration projects.
Take the U-Bahn line U1 to Fürth Rathaus, then a few minutes' walk to Waagplatz. By car, take the A73 (exit Fürth-Poppenreuth), but parking in the old town is very limited – public transport is strongly recommended.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the stalls at usual Christmas market prices; all proceeds go to old town preservation. Mulled wine from vintner Heindel approx. €4-5, sausage approx. €4-5.
If you want to see the craft demonstrations, come on the weekend – glassblowers, blacksmiths, and woodcarvers regularly demonstrate their art. The market is more compact and cozier than the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt – ideal for a relaxed Advent evening.
