Season opening in Wilhelmsburger Inselpark — Music, Sport, Creative Activities
The Wilhelmsburger Inselpark, with nearly 100 hectares, is one of Hamburg's largest parks — created in 2013 for the International Garden Show (IGA) and since then the green heart of the Wilhelmsburg district. Frühlingserwachen (Spring Awakening) opens the season every year in mid-May: when the park, after its winter rest, once again becomes a stage for public events, this day marks the start.
From 12 PM to 6 PM, the programme unfolds on Kurt-Emmerich-Platz and in the surrounding park areas. Unlike compact neighbourhood festivals, Frühlingserwachen utilizes the entire park area — which the organisers leverage to spatially distribute programme points.
Hamburg ensembles perform on stage:
The sporting centrepiece is the Spring Olympiad: a course of ten disciplines that children and adults navigate. On the programme: Spring Sprint, Cornhole, climbing stations, disc golf, Hobby Horsing, football bowling, badminton, Ladder Golf, Viking Chess, and jump rope. Those who collect ten stamps receive a small reward at the Inselpark tent — incentive enough to persevere.
Concurrently, creative stations are running: clay crafting, giant soap bubbles, water construction sites, environmental workshops with seed bomb making. The WÄLDERHAUS Science Center opens its doors for free; research stations and environmental education stands expand the knowledge offerings.
Street food stalls, specialty coffee, ice cream, and healthy snacks cater to visitors — fitting the family-oriented theme. Admission is completely free, organised by the Hamburg-Mitte borough office in cooperation with park partners.
The 2026 season opening once again brings together the park partners under one programme: stage artists, sports stations, creative offerings, and environmental education. The Hamburg-Mitte borough office coordinates the event.
The Spring Olympiad with its ten disciplines is the family centrepiece; the dance programme on stage structures the afternoon into slots. Theater Mimekry presents an ecological performance about soil and humus at 4 PM, and the BalFolk concert at 4:30 PM heralds the end of the festival.
