Authentically mining-themed in the Ore Mountains
For decades, the Freiberger Christmarkt has been a well-known name far beyond the Ore Mountains. Those wishing to experience Christmas in its most authentic Saxon form should visit Freiberg in the Mittelsachsen district – a city whose identity is inextricably linked to the silver wealth beneath the ground. On the medieval Obermarkt, framed by the Cathedral of St. Mary and the Town Hall, around 95 wooden stalls form an atmospheric ensemble.
Unlike most German Christmas markets, Freiberg consistently emphasizes its mining tradition. Miners' folk art, handcrafted incense smokers (Räuchermänner), Schwibbogen candle arches, nutcrackers, and angels from the Ore Mountains characterize the offerings. A nine-meter-high Ore Mountains pyramid rotates in the center of the market; the Kleine Bergwerksstube (Little Mining Room) invites children to craft.
Arguably the most emotional experience of the market is the Miners' Parade in Torchlight, held annually on St. Nicholas' Day. Uniformed miners and brass bands march through the old town with burning torches – a living piece of intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO since 2016. Further highlights include the traditional Stollen cake cutting on the first Advent Sunday, the Miners' Festival on the third Advent Sunday, and Bach's Christmas Oratorio in Freiberg Cathedral.
Over 250 festively illuminated shops accompany the Christmarkt throughout the entire old town. On Advent Sundays, many remain open until 6 p.m. The city itself – with its UNESCO World Heritage mining ensemble of the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region – deserves extensive exploration: a day trip that goes far beyond the market.
The 2026 edition upholds the traditions that have made the Freiberger Christmarkt one of Germany's finest. The approximately 95 wooden stalls on the Obermarkt will offer Ore Mountains handicrafts, regional specialties, mulled wine, Stollen cake, and gingerbread. A nine-meter-high Ore Mountains pyramid will rotate in the center, and the Little Mining Room will invite children to craft. On the four Advent Sundays, shops in the old town will be open until 6 p.m.
