Long Night of Culture and Shopping in the Silver City
On the second Saturday in September, the historic old town of Freiberg transforms into a vibrant stage of a special kind. The Freiberger Nachtschicht is simultaneously a night of culture, a long shopping night, and a city festival – a concept unparalleled in Central Saxony, attracting thousands of visitors to the Silver City.
City center merchants extend their opening hours and organize special promotions; restaurants and cafés are open until midnight. Live bands and mobile street artists perform in squares and alleys, fashion shows present local fashion, and light installations and projections on historic facades give the old town a unique character.
Since its founding in 1186, Freiberg has been inextricably linked with silver mining. The Freiberg Mining Academy, founded in 1765, is the oldest mining university in the world and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Montanregion Erzgebirge. The old town with Obermarkt, Dom St. Marien, Petriviertel, and Burgstraße is the stage for the Nachtschicht – Freiberg is located in the Mittelsachsen district (AGS 14522), state of Saxony.
The Freiberger Nachtschicht is jointly organized by the Silberstadt Freiberg, the Merchants' Association, city center retailers, and restaurateurs. This broad sponsorship explains the event's vitality – it is not a centrally staged city festival, but rather many decentralized activities that together make the entire city center resonate.
As dusk falls, the Nachtschicht begins: city center merchants open their doors from 6 p.m., and restaurants and cafés remain open until midnight. Bands play in squares and alleys, walking acts and brass bands parade through the streets, and fashion shows present local designers and shops. Light installations and projections onto historic facades turn the old town into a nocturnal stage.
A cultural program area features performances by regional artists – the mix of fashion, music, and visible craftsmanship is part of the Nachtschicht's profile.
