10 Years of RENNSTEIGRIDE — Mountain Bike Anniversary in the Thuringian Forest

Over ten years, the RENNSTEIGRIDE has developed into one of the most important mountain bike events in the low mountain range. The venue is Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig, a district of the independent city of Suhl in the Thuringian Forest — 750 meters above sea level, in the middle of one of Germany's best mountain bike areas. Here runs the famous Rennsteig, Germany's oldest ridge trail, along the heights of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The RENNSTEIGRIDE routes wind through forests, along forest paths and trails, with magnificent panoramic views extending to Bavaria.

Six Distances for Every Challenge

The concept aims for broad participation, not elite sport. Six distances are available: the Supermarathon for the toughest, the Marathon as the classic premier distance, the Half Marathon for mountain bike enthusiasts, a dedicated E-Bike class (making the event interesting for older riders and those stepping up), the BasicRIDE as the entry-level distance, and the JuniorRIDE for children and teenagers. All routes are designed as circular tours with start and finish in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig — not a point-to-point route, but a festival format.

Three Circular Courses, Three Characters

The routes are divided into three different circular courses, each with its own character: one course with challenging climbs for the marathon distances, a second with rapid descents for the speed seekers, and a third family-friendly one with moderate inclines. Forest paths alternate with singletracks and narrow trails, interspersed with wide views over the Thuringian Forest.

Organizers with Rennsteiglauf Experience

The organizer is Rennsteiglauf Sportmanagement und Touristik GmbH — the organization that has been hosting the traditional Rennsteiglauf (running event) for decades. This experience with mass events in the Thuringian Forest is also evident at the RENNSTEIGRIDE: route marking, aid stations, medical services, and finish line catering are professionally organized. The festival thrives on „cherished tradition, warm community spirit, challenging adventures“ — tradition, community, and sporting challenge in equal measure.

Schmiedefeld and the Vessertal Valley as a Backdrop

Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is located at the entrance to the famous Vessertal valley, protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The routes skirt this extraordinary natural scenery without burdening it. In September, the forests are still densely leaved, temperatures are mild, and visibility is often crystal clear — ideal conditions for an outdoor sports event.

RENNSTEIGRIDE — edition 2026

The 10th RENNSTEIGRIDE on September 5, 2026, celebrates the anniversary of this mountain bike event in the Thuringian Forest. Six distances — Supermarathon, Marathon, Half Marathon, E-Bike, BasicRIDE, JuniorRIDE — with start and finish in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig. Three circular courses with different characters, forest paths, singletracks, and panoramic views over the Thuringian Forest.

10 Years of RENNSTEIGRIDE — Anniversary 2026

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the RENNSTEIGRIDE celebrates its 10th edition. Start and finish in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig, six distances for every skill level, three circular courses through the forests of the Thuringian Slate Mountains.

Six Distances, Three Circular Courses

The division of distances allows participation from hardcore mountain bikers to children and e-bike riders. Forest paths, singletracks, and narrow trails alternate, with panoramic views extending to Bavaria in between.
