Grand civic festival with civic run every two years in the north of Stuttgart
Freiberg am Neckar is located on the northern edge of the Stuttgart region in the Ludwigsburg district, nestled between vineyards and the fertile Neckar floodplain. Every two years – always in even-numbered years – the town celebrates its grand civic festival in July, organized by local clubs and supported by the city administration. The special thing about it: the civic festival belongs to the clubs, not to a commercial organizer. Every stand, every stage, every bratwurst grill is run by volunteers from sports, music, or social clubs.
During the festival weekend, Marktstraße transforms into a continuous festival mile with two to three main stages, dozens of catering stands, and a large children's area. The musical offerings range from cover bands and gospel choirs to DJ sets in the late-night zone. The local history society often presents special exhibitions, while the Liederkranz and music associations give their best.
The Freiberger Bürgerfestlauf, organized by TuS Freiberg, has been the sporting kick-off to the festival weekend for over two decades and is one of the largest public runs in the Stuttgart region. Over 1,600 runners of all ages compete on four courses – from the 600m Bambini run for the little ones to the 4.85km FunRun and the 10km main run. The routes lead through the city center, lined with festival visitors cheering on the athletes.
The civic festival has been a biennial event since its inception and sees itself as a showcase of Freiberg's club life. The proceeds flow directly into the city's volunteer structures – training materials, youth work, musical instruments, club outings. More than 50 clubs, from shooting clubs and brass bands to football clubs, are involved in setting up and dismantling – a true community effort that sets the civic festival apart from the often commercially driven city festivals of other municipalities.
The 2026 Civic Festival – the eighth since the introduction of the Civic Festival Run – starts on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 6:00 PM with the 14th Civic Festival Run in the city center. Over 1,600 runners are expected on four courses (600 m Bambini, 1.65 km school runs, 4.85 km FunRun, 10 km main run). Registration opens on February 27, 2026, via raceresult.com.
After the award ceremonies, the actual civic festival begins: catering stands, live music on the stages, and relaxed get-togethers until late in the evening. Saturday and Sunday offer two full festival days with a packed stage program and a large family area.
Detailed band performances and club stands will be published in the weeks before the festival in the Freiberg city program booklet.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Entry fee for the Civic Festival Run approx. EUR 10–20 depending on the course and age group (school children free). Food and drinks at festival prices at the club stands.
